Apple harvest time is a big reminder that we’re making it through the summer, and fall isn’t that far away.

To celebrate the importance of apples in our region, Metro Parks and Nature is inviting the community to Apple Jam on Sauvie Island, taking place Saturday, Aug. 24.

The event, including family activities, is being held in the historic orchard of Howell Territorial Park.

Apple Jam runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park, which is located at 13901 N.W. Howell Park Road.

“Participants will be able to harvest apples, play games, see a cider press in action and connect with others in the region who are dedicated to reducing food waste and increasing access to resources like the park’s free orchard,” according to Metro Parks and Nature.

At the free event, music, food and harvest bags will be provided.

The event is also a chance to connect with Oregon history. At the park, you’ll see an 1850s farmhouse that was once the home of James and Julia Bybee.

“The orchard is planted with cuttings from apple and pear trees carried over the Oregon Trail,” according to Metro Parks and Nature, part of the Metro regional government.

“This is a lovely way to spend time outside with your community, with your family, and with others who enjoy getting in touch with some of the agricultural history of this region,” Hannah Erickson, content and marketing specialist with Metro Parks and Nature, said. “Sauvie Island has a long and rich history of being a place where agriculture has flourished.”

Pets are not allowed at the event, and registration is encouraged. You can sign up at www.oregonmetro.gov/calendar .
