Gov. Sununu shares what Trump must do to win NH and 2024 election

PORTSMOUTH — Republican Gov. Chris Sununu believes the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris is far from over.

Asked Wednesday if he thinks Trump still has a chance to win the presidential election, Sununu said, “Oh without a doubt, the polls are definitely tightening up.”

“I think he still has a very strong chance of even winning here in New Hampshire, it’s about a five-point difference right now and this is the high water mark for Kamala Harris,” Sununu said during an interview Wednesday in Portsmouth after the official opening of the New Hampshire Seacoast Greenway, more commonly known as the rail trail.

Sununu stated even with Harris being ahead in polls "with 60 days left in a state that typically waits a long time to make up their minds, you’ve still got 10 to 12 percent undecided in this state, so that’s a huge opportunity for the former president to make up some ground.”

Sununu has been supporting Trump in the run-up to the November election after supporting Nikki Haley in the Republican primary. Haley was soundly defeated by Trump in primaries in New Hampshire and across the nation.

Sununu outlines what Trump must do to win, including focus on issues

Sununu, who is finishing his fourth term as governor after deciding not to run for re-election, believes Trump to win “must stay on the issues, be professional, stay away from those personal attacks.”

“On the issues, he has the answers, he has the opportunity to show a path, to show that he’s going to be that agent of change to help people dictate a more affordable lifestyle. She’s not,” Sununu said. “Her administration, as much as she wants to try to convince people she hasn’t been in the White House for four years, that’s a really hard argument to make because it’s not real.”

Harris appeared at the Throwback Brewery in North Hampton Wednesday, where she discussed a plan to help small businesses.

Sununu predicted Harris “is going to keep getting caught in these kind of circular gobbledygook answers to things and spin her wheels while Trump is really trying to convince people and explain to folks there is a path to a fundamental change, both from a regulatory perspective and policy perspective.”

He thinks Trump will work to get people “to not have so much anxiety on how much they have to pay for everything, how much rent they have to pay, how hard it is to put groceries on the table and all that.”

“That’s where I think he has the opportunity, and I have no doubt he’ll take advantage of it during the next 60 days,” he added.

Sununu sees future recession and a role for himself to help companies

Asked about his future, Sununu says he hasn’t yet decided exactly what he’ll do after his last term ends, but stated he will “go back to the private sector.”

“I’d like to still be a voice in politics, but I’m not looking to run for anything,” he said.

The private sector work could include helping some companies navigate a potentially tough economic future, he said.

“What I foresee in the next five to 10 years is some challenging economic waters coming. There’s still going to be great opportunity in America, but there will be a recession in one form or another, it is coming,” Sununu said. “You can’t put this much cash into the economy and just hope that you get through. At some point the piper has to be paid.”

Helping companies manage “both the economic and regulatory landscapes that could be challenging as they come down the road, that kind of excites me,” he added.

Trump’s polices while in office have already leeched billions from our federal resources to give the wealthy a tax cut. His stated future policies would continue that bleed and add to the personal expenses of every American because we’d have to pay for the tariffs he wants to impose. His appointments to SCOTUS have resulted in the loss of body autonomy for women and put every other gain women & minorities have gained in the last century in jeopardy. He’s dangerous and Sununu is out of his mind to support him.
