Traip Academy upends Mount View, wins second game of season

KITTERY, Maine - From the opening kick, Traip Academy was in complete control of its 8-Man Small South matchup against Mount View, as the Rangers led wire-to-wire in a 48-6 win.

"I thought today went well," Traip Academy head coach Eric Lane said. "We came out and accomplished what we wanted to do."

"We knew what we had to do this game, and it really just came down to executing," Traip's Phin Fifield said. "We've come out flat in a lot of games this year, but I think today, we were ready to play football, and I think that was the biggest difference."

The 48 points is the most points that Traip (2-5) has scored in a game this season, while six points is the fewest they've allowed, beating the previous season-low of 8 in Traip's win over Telstar Regional.

Traip's Max Jordan opened the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run with 9:38 in the first quarter. Just 65 seconds later, Ben Martine returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown.

Traip added two more scores in the opening quarter. Fifield scored on a 32-yard run (and caught a pass for the two-point conversion). Jordan thenconnected with Chris Balano for a 20-yard touchdown pitch-and-catch with 1:50 left in the quarter as the Rangers took a 28-0 lead into the second quarter.

Jordan scored two more touchdowns before halftime, one a 4-yard run and another on a 22-yarder as Traip took a 40-0 lead into halftime.

Fifield scored his second touchdown of the game, this one a 12-yard run with 3:40 left in the third.

Mount View's Gage Nason's 7-yard touchdown run with 1:21 left in the fourth quarter was the Mustangs first points of the season.

While the offense was sizzling, Traip's special teams unit was making plays as well. Colin O'Laughlin blocked a punt in the first quarter, and Traip got its hands on two more punts before intermission.

"Defense came out and played lights out," Lane added. "We had three blocked punts that set us up to be able to put the ball in the end zone easier than driving it down the field. I was happy to get a good lead, so I can get a lot of my younger players in so that they could get some quality varsity football time."

Traip Academy visits Gray-New Gloucester on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

York loses by one-possession for third time this season

SABATTUS, Maine - It was a back-and-forth affair between Class C South's York and Class D South's Oak Hill/St. Dom's, but it was the Raiders who pulled out a 41-34 win.

York will end its regular season on Friday against Leavitt at 6 p.m. Both teams are 2-5. York's two other one-possession losses came to Oceanside, 40-35 and Brunswick, 24-20.

York quarterback Peter Martin tossed five touchdown passes, three to Lukas Ketchum - two for 15 yards and the third for three yards. Trey Fogg (20 yards) and Jack Estes (15) also caught a touchdown pass.

"The kids fought hard, it came down to a few plays," York head coach Matt Nelson said. "We had four turnovers which is hard to overcome, giving a team four extra possessions. The game basically came down to turnovers and Oak Hill won the turnover battle."

The game was tied at 21-21 at halftime. The Wildcats had a potential go-ahead, or at least tying, drive in the fourth quarter, but Martin was intercepted and the Raiders ran out the clock.

Exeter defense stands tall, fends off late Memorial rally

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2aWwHb_0wCmnkE200

EXETER — One could argue which aspect of Exeter football has been the best this season - offense, defense or special teams.

On Friday night, it was undoubtedly the defense that stood tall late in the game as Exeter held off a Manchester Memorial fourth quarter rally, to win 13-6 in a Division I matchup at Exeter High School. Exeter improved to 7-0 on the season, while Memorial is now 4-3.

With the Blue Hawks leading 13-6, the Crusaders, on the strength of recovering an onside kick, had fourth-and-10 from the Exeter 13 with 10 seconds left.

Memorial quarterback Brady Harrison threw an incomplete pass in the end zone, and the Blue Hawks took over on downs, and took a knee to secure the win.

"Playoff game, playoff atmosphere," Exeter head coach Bill Ball said. "(Memorial) is tough. They're physical and they give you problems with the triple option. I give them a lot of credit, and I give our guys a lot of credit for hanging in there."

Memorial's Joel Gomez hauled in an 8-yard touchdown from Collin Beaulieu with 2:06 left, cutting Exeter's lead to 13-6. Exeter's Sam Dulac sacked Beaulieu, who split time at quarterback with Harrison, on the 2-point conversion attempt.

Memorial recovered the ensuing onside kick. Beaulieu ran for 22 yards to the Exeter 28 on first down. A few plays later, the Crusaders converted a fourth-and-5 to the Exeter 13. Memorial spiked the ball on the first down, and three more incomplete passes ended the game.

"We're working as hard as we can every day in practice," Sam Dulac said of the defense. "We're relentless out there, we know our assignments and we just play our best (brand) of football."

Sam Dulac had a fumble recovery in the first half, and Charlie Dulac had an interception in the first half to end Memorial's final drive of the half.

Exeter's Daniel Batstone scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:21 in the first quarter, and Tyler Bland added a 2-yard run in the second quarter with 9:54 left.

"I thought we had a couple of chances along the way, and we didn't capitalize on," Ball said. "But, a lot of that was due to Memorial, I give them a ton of credit."

Exeter visits Portland (Maine) High School next Friday at 6 p.m. for an out-of-state game.

Marshwood wins third straight game, runs past Cheverus

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2aGt1t_0wCmnkE200

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – Marshwood reeled off its third straight convincing win on Friday night, with a 41-13 triumph over Cheverus in a Class B South contest.

Marshwood is now 4-3 on the season, while Cheverus is 2-5. Marshwood concludes the regular season next week at Massabesic.

Senior quarterback Tyler Hussey led Marshwood, running for 73 yards and three touchdowns on just four carries. He also completed all five passes he attempted for another 155 yards and a touchdown.

Another Marshwood senior, Ryan Essex had three catches for 100 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown reception. He also had four carries for 75 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown.

“It’s great to get the win on Senior Night,” said Marshwood coach Alex Rotsko. “The kids have worked hard at practice. We’ve had a lot of guys go down with injuries, so we’ve faced some adversity this year. They’ve done a great job, week-in and week-out practicing and trying to get better. I’m happy for them.”

Essex’s 63-yard touchdown run came two plays after Cheverus scored to cut the lead to 27-13. It the first nail in the Cheverus coffin, and after Hussey recovered a fumble on Cheverus’ next drive the Hawks drove the final nail on a 3-yard Landon Waterman touchdown with 6:23 left.

The Hawks scored touchdowns on each of their first six drives before punting with their second team offense on the field late in the game; five of those six scoring drives took five plays or less as Marshwood had five plays that hit for more than 30 yards.

Hussey opened the scoring with a 13-yard touchdown scramble on the Hawks’ opening drive, and he hit Essex for a 48-yard touchdown on the second play of their second drive.

Hussey struck for a 30-yard touchdown run with 2:01 left in the half, giving the Hawks a 20-6 halftime lead.

Hussey's third touchdown came on the Hawks’ first drive of the third quarter. He had to leave the game for a play after being hit late and driven into the ground by a Cheverus defender, resulting in a personal foul penalty being called against the Stags. Hussey returned after one play, and two snaps later he ran in a touchdown from 15 yards out to open up a 27-6 advantage.

“This feels great,” said Hussey. “(Cheverus) is a pretty solid team, with good size. So, this was great.”

Rotsko feels like his team is peaking at the right time with the postseason approaching.

“We're (hitting our stride), but we’re just hanging on by a thread to tell you the truth," Rotsko said. "We’re running out of bodies (due to injuries). I think we got out of this game healthy, so that’s the most important thing at this point.”

Matt Baker led Cheverus with 133 yards on 23 carries, including an 11-yard touchdown run.

Spaulding comes up short, Timberlane wins its first game

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=3qc085_0wCmnkE200

ROCHESTER – Desperation was in the air Friday night at Hugo Bolin Field.

The Spaulding High School football team was looking for its first win this season against a New Hampshire opponent, while Timberlane was seeking its initial victory against anyone.

Spaulding (1-6) squandered a six-point halftime lead and eventually dropped a 27-18 decision to the Owls. Trailing 12-6 at the break, Timberlane (1-6) outscored Spaulding, 21-6 in the second half.

“They took it to us in the second half and we didn’t have much of a response,” said Spaulding coach Dan Hodsdon. “We started fast which is something I’ve been talking to those guys quite a bit. Self-inflicted wounds are another thing we talk about quite a bit that kind of hold us back at times and reared its head in the second half as well. Penalties, turnovers and things like that, the things that we can control, you can’t have those when you’re scrapping in close games like this.”

With the score tied at 12-12 late in the third quarter the Owls went ahead to stay on a 14-yard keeper by quarterback Jeremy Mlocek and a 2-point conversion run by Giovanni Recesso that made it 20-12. The score was set up by a Spaulding turnover.

Senior co-captain Seth Cortina scored one of Spaulding’s three touchdowns on a run of 16 yards that put the Red Raiders in front 12-6 with 8:27 remaining in the first half. Colby Lambert's 55-yard touchdown run brought Spaulding to within 20-18 with 2:02 left in the third quarter.

Timberlane's Liam Kelley scored his team's first touchdown on a 3-yard run early in the second quarter that made it 6-6. Mlocek added a 2-yard touchdown run early in the third to make it 12-12.

“All week we prepared but I think Timberlane prepared better,” Cortina said. “I don’t think we gave it our all in practice this week. I think it was very sloppy and we have so much more. I really want to show it and I know the whole team wants to show it. This does sting. We still have two games left and there’s only one way to go from here.”

Spaulding failed on all three of its conversion attempts which came back to haunt the Red Raiders in the fourth when they were trying to catch the Owls. Had they made at least one it would have been a one-possession game late in the fourth quarter.

“Those points are important and when we didn’t get ‘em that kind of sealed our fate and limited what we could do in the second half,” Hodsdon said.

The Red Raiders got off to a great start when sophomore Tyler Lindsay returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Timberlane scored the clinching touchdown on a 3-yard run by Recesso with 6:18 left in the fourth that made it 27-18.

Spaulding hosts rival Dover next week.

“We’ve got to find a way to play four quarters of football,” Hodsdon said.

St. Thomas Aquinas runs away in Homecoming victory against Milford

DOVER - Dillon Lassard scored four of St. Thomas Aquinas' six rushing touchdowns in Friday's 42-6 win over Milford in a Division II game.

Kenny Avery opened the scoring with a 7-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter and Andrew Rodriguez also scored a rushing touchdown for the Saints.

"Things went well, the kids played with emotion, and they did a great job defensively," St. Thomas Aquinas head coach Ed McDonough said. "The kids played tremendous defense. They were ready to play, everything went well for us. Milford was physical, but our kids met the challenge."

Lassard scored three of his four rushing touchdowns in the first half as the Saints took a 28-0 lead into halftime.

The Saints improved to 3-4, and will visit Kingswood (2-4) next Friday at 7 p.m.

Somersworth drops home game against Gilford

SOMERSWORTH - Somersworth was held scoreless for the first time all season, falling to Gilford, 20-0 in a Division III game.

"It wasn't a good game, we didn''t play our best," Somersworth head coach Jeremy Lambert said. "We didn't come out ready for a tough game. Gilford showed up to play, and we just didn't respond."

Somersworth is now 3-3 on the season, and plays Newport next Friday at 7 p.m. Newport (4-1), along with Somersworth moved up to Division III this year.

"We're going to learn a lot from this game," Lambert said. "We're going to have to certainly get a lot tougher mentally, and eliminate mistakes. We're going to have to clean up some of our sloppy play and fix some of those mental mistakes to compete with Newport next week."

    York (2-3) at Oak Hill/St. Dom's (3-3)

    Kickoff: Saturday, 12:30 p.m

The breakdown: The Wildcats are back in action following last week's bye, and look to keep up the momentum they were building with a Week 5 win.

York has scored at least 20 points in every game, and Oak Hill allowed 50 points to undefeated Class D Wells. There may be some holes for the likes of York's Peter Martin, Jack Estes, Lucas Ketchum, Trey Fogg, JJ Luchette and others to exploit.

Mount View (0-6) at Traip Academy (1-5)

    Kickoff: Saturday, 1 p.m.

The breakdown: Last year, Traip Academy snapped a 22-game losing streak with a 42-6 victory over Mount View. With a victory already under their belt this season, head coach Eric Lane is confident the Rangers can pick up a second win Saturday.

Mount View, which has not scored this season, has allowed at least 40 points in each game this season, and 70 twice. Defensively, Lane said Traip must key in on Mount View's outside run.

    Bedford (6-0) at Portsmouth/Oyster River (0-6)

    Kickoff: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

The breakdown: It was a heartbreaking loss last week for the ClipperCats, and the road certainly doesn't get any easier with undefeated Bedford coming to town.

"(Bedford) is the full package," Portsmouth/Oyster River head coach Brian Pafford. "There's no doubt we've gotten a little bit better every week. We need to continue that trend going into the last three weeks of the season."

Dover (3-3) vs. Bishop Guertin (4-2)

    Kickoff: Saturday, 6 p.m. (At Hollis-Brookline)

The breakdown: It's been said that three straight wins makes a winning streak, and Dover is on a winning streak following last week's thrilling victory over Sanford, Maine. But, the road doesn't stop there as the Green Wave hit the road to take on a quality Bishop Guertin squad. The game will be played at Hollis-Brookline.

"We're looking to get off on a good foot and have a good week of preparation ... and try to get ourselves a team victory," Dover head coach Eric Cumba said.
