PORTSMOUTH — Fortune has ranked the Portsmouth 10th in its third annual Fortune 50 Best Places to Live for Families 2024 list.

The list showcases cities and towns across America — one from each state — that best support the unique needs of multigenerational families. Portsmouth is one of just two cities, joining No. 1-ranked Silver Spring, Maryland, to make the top 10 for the second year in a row. Portsmouth is the only city from a New England state in the top 10.

Portsmouth officials proud to be honored

“We're lucky to be recognized on so many 'best of' lists,” said Mayor Deaglan McEachern in a statement released by the city. “But making it to Fortune's Top 10 Best Places to Live for Families two years in a row is truly special. It’s always an honor to see our town celebrated, and it reminds us of how far we've come. As someone raising my own family here, I see firsthand how Portsmouth, the City of the Open Door, welcomes both the young and the old with excellent schools, top-notch healthcare, a great small business ecosytem and a warm, welcoming community. We've got so much to be proud of in our town, and I couldn't be happier!”

Ben VanCamp, Greater Portsmouth Chamber Collaborative's president, said, "It is an honor once again to be included in the top 10. ... The quality of life, underscored by a thriving arts and culture community, walkable streets and great parks and recreational opportunities means Portsmouth is also a welcoming community."

To build this comprehensive ranking, Fortune worked with several of its key Fortune Well data partners — including CVS Health, Caring.com , Healthgrades, Ineedana.com , Sharecare, and WitLytic — to help provide information for nearly 200 data categories. Fortune also independently evaluated over 2,000 cities, towns, suburbs, exurbs, villages, and townships with approximately 20,000 residents or more in all 50 states. The methodology can be found here.

“The 50 Fortune Best Places to Live for Families list is based on a robust data set to help our readers find places to settle down with ample resources to support their families for the future,” said Fortune senior reporter Alexa Mikhail, who dove into data sets to develop the ranking. “Where we live plays a critical role in determining the strength of our community ties, which most heavily impacts our well-being, happiness, and health at work and at home. It’s why a list like this is critical.”

“As a growing number of people find themselves in the sandwich generation—squeezed between caring for kids and aging parents—they are increasingly looking for communities that support the needs of caregivers and multigenerational families,” said Jennifer Fields, Fortune Well editor. “In our research, the cities that rose to the top were those that had a range of resources and amenities that appeal to their oldest and youngest residents.”
