PORTSMOUTH — Honoring esteemed member, Lotte Jacobi, of the New Hampshire Art Association will open a photography exhibition by the same name on Aug. 2. Lotte Jacobi was considered a premiere photographer of the 20th century. She photographed an array of well known cultural figures and intellectuals including Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Robert Frost and more. Jacobi was instrumental in persuading the founders of NHAA to accept photography as a fine art medium, gaining traction in the 1940s. This exhibition honors Jacobi's legacy and aims to celebrate the art of photography by highlighting the exceptional talent of contemporary photographers. The Lotte Jacobi Photography Exhibition will be showcased at the New Hampshire Art Association, 136 State St., Portsmouth, from July 31 to Sept. 1. Join us for the opening reception on Friday, Aug. 2, from 5-8 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m.

This juried exhibition was open to all New England artists working in photographic mediums, providing a platform for artists to showcase their work, and for the community to appreciate the diverse perspectives and techniques within the photographic arts. The jurors Brittany Severance and Eric Nichols took on the task of assessing all 174 submissions to create a cohesive exhibition.

When asked about their process, Severance had this to say “The challenge is to curate a show that demonstrates the vast array of styles and subject matter of the photographers, while also finding pieces that may have a conversation with one another on the wall. When first viewing the work, I leaned into immediate reactions… - did the work evoke an emotional response, create curiosity, or immerse me in the creation of a powerful narrative?” Severance is an award winning filmmaker, photographer, and educator based out of Worcester, Mass. Through a collaborative effort with co-juror Eric Nichols, the two decided to focus on the idea of capturing real life moments. “Ultimately, the photographs chosen for this exhibition stood out for their ability to capture moments of beauty, vulnerability, and authenticity in everyday life. They celebrate the ordinary as extraordinary and invite viewers to contemplate the profound within the mundane.” Nichols explains. This exhibition promises to be a journey through the lens of everyday life, offering a fresh and intimate look at the world around us.
