[Portland, ORE, July 25, 2024] — Residents of Oregon and SW Washington are in the middle of a busy wildfire season as the climate crisis threatens to upend more communities. The American Red Cross Cascades Region opened our first shelter in La Pine on June 25th due to the Darlene 3 Fire and we have not stopped since. We are currently operating in 4 different locations in our region plus we are helping support or neighboring Red Cross regions in Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Not so long ago, Bonner General Health, the hospital in Sandpoint, Idaho, had four OB/GYNs on staff, who treated patients from multiple rural counties. That was before Idaho’s near-total abortion ban went into effect almost two years ago, criminalizing most abortions. All four of Bonner’s OB/GYNs left by last summer, some citing fears that the state’s ban exposed them to legal peril for doing their jobs.
Whitman County Board Of Adjustment Unanimously Approves Conditional Use Permit For Apparent Amazon Warehouse On Moscow-Pullman Highway
The Whitman County Board of Adjustment has granted a Conditional Use Permit for an apparent Amazon warehouse off the Moscow-Pullman Highway. The board unanimously approved the required CUP during a public hearing in Colfax Thursday night. The applicants are Ambrose Property Group and Kimley-Horn. Those companies build distribution warehouses for Amazon across the country. The application doesn’t mention the online retail giant.

Crews Battling new 1000 Acre Lightning-Caused Wildfire in Nez Perce County
JULIAETTA - Nez Perce County, about 5 miles southwest of Juliaetta, just south of the Latah County line. Incident Overview: Firefighters are battling the Gwen Fire, a new lightning-caused fire that started around 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The blaze, currently burning grass and brush in steep canyon terrain, was estimated to be about 800 acres in size as of 9:30 a.m. on Thursday has now grown to 1000 acres. No containment had been achieved at that time.
Air Quality Advisory Issued for the Nez Perce Reservation
LAPWAI - An Air Quality Advisory has been issued for the Nez Perce Reservation due to smoke from wildfires. This advisory will remain in effect until Friday, July 26, at 10:00 AM. Wildfire smoke may move in and out of the area depending on fire and wind activity, impacting some areas more than others. No EPA/NPT burn permits will be approved during this period.
