Mid-Hudson Valley weather outlook: High temps, what else to expect this week

The weather for the beginning of this week in the Poughkeepsie and Middletown areas is staying fairly consistent with what we've seen so far this summer: extremely hot and awfully muggy.

As of Monday, according to the National Weather Service, there is a heat advisory as well as a hazardous weather outlook for both Poughkeepsie and Middletown.

However, there may be some reprieve toward the end of this week and into the weekend for residents in the mid-Hudson Valley, according to Meteorologist Abigayle Gant of the National Weather Service Albany Office and Meteorologist Brian Ciemnezki of the National Weather Service New York Office.

Weather forecast for Poughkeepsie: July 15-19

The heat advisory for the Poughkeepsie area this week is in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday. "Our heat index values for today are likely to reach the upper 90s," Gant said Monday morning.

The temperature is expected to be in the low 90s Monday, but expect for it to feel like almost 100 degrees when you add in the humidity.

Also, there's a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms Monday, but higher chances for precipitation Tuesday.

The hazardous weather outlook for severe thunderstorms, which is in effect for western Ulster, as well as eastern and southeast Dutchess, appears to hit north of the Poughkeepsie area, Gant said, but be aware there could be isolated scattered showers. There is potential for damaging wind gusts with these storms in the Poughkeepsie area, but not expected.

Tuesday is going to have similar temperatures to Monday, with the high in the low- to mid-90s, but with even higher humidity. The temperature will feel like it's right around 100 degrees, "maybe even grazing just over 100 tomorrow," Gant noted.

For Wednesday thus far, the forecast predicts the trends for early in the week to continue, with temperatures in the low 90s, heat indexes to be closer to mid- to upper 90s, and chances for precipitation. Gant said it's a bit uncertain, though.

"There's a frontal system that's going to be traveling towards the region," she said.

A cold front is on its way, but take that with a grain of salt — it's cooler relative to 90 degrees.

For Thursday and Friday, with the front coming in, temperatures will finally cool down a bit, with the highs expected to be in the mid- to upper 80s, and the heat indexes to be right around there as well. "This new air mass will be a lot drier than what it has been," Gant said.

"We really don't have concern for this kind of oppressive heat Thursday and Friday," Gant said.

Saturday is anticipated to have temperatures in the mid to upper 80s, and Sunday is anticipated to have temperatures in the upper 80s or low 90s. The temperatures seem to progressively get hotter over the weekend, Gant said. There is also a lower chance for precipitation, and the humidity won't be as high as it is at the beginning of this week.

    Weather forecast Middletown: July 15-19

In the Middletown area, the heat advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. Tuesday. "We're looking at hot conditions Monday through Wednesday," Ciemnezki said.

The temperatures for Monday and Tuesday are predicted to be in the mid to upper 90s, and Wednesday is predicted to be in right around 90 degrees, but the heat index values for all three days, what it'll actually feel like when you add in humidity, are between in the mid to upper 90s, and could end up near 100.

The hazardous weather outlook for Middletown is in effect beginning Monday. The National Weather Service recommends checking the NOAA Weather Radio or their website, weather.gov, for updated information.

In terms of precipitation, Ciemnezki said to expect a chance of typical summer thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday. However, if you're going to see precipitation, it'll most likely be on Wednesday.

"There will be a better chance of showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday with the passage of a cold front, and then drier weather for Thursday and Friday," Ciemnezki said.

Similar to Poughkeepsie for later in the week, the Middletown area should feel some relief regarding the temperatures and humidity too, with the highs for Thursday and Friday in the mid 80s.

This weekend in Middletown is looking mostly dry, Ciemnezki said, with temperatures going up a touch to the upper 80s.
