Dr. Louise-Anne Morin still is enthusiastic about veterinary medicine and caring for animals, but she certainly has enjoyed these first two months as a retiree.
There are the obvious benefits, of course, like reduced stress and more time for leisure. And, for some, taking a few strokes off their golf game.
“I’m still getting used to not going to the office every day, but my schedule is filled with golf all summer,” said Morin, who worked for almost 30 years as a Millbrook-based vet. “I’ve been playing with friends, going to different outings.”
Winning tournaments, too.
The Poughkeepsie resident updated her golf resume on Monday, winning the Women’s Dutchess County Amateur Championship at McCann Memorial Golf Course. Morin, who is affectively known as “Dr. Lou,” shot a 6-over 78 to win decisively and repeat as tournament champion. That followed her victory last month in the Dutchess County Senior Amateur.

“I’m super excited,” she said. “Life is good, no complaints. I’m grateful and appreciative of all the people who organize this and make it such a fun event on a phenomenal course. There’s nothing like the competition and the camaraderie with the local ladies.”
Ann Kania took second, carding an 86. Mary Moore and Samantha Morley each shot 90 and tied for third. That group topped a field of 60 participants.
The women’s tournament was held a day after the men’s Dutchess County Amateur, which was played over three days on the same course.
“Winning validates the work you’ve put in and the success is always rewarding,” Morin said. “Competitive golf is different from playing with your friends on the weekend because it’s about keeping the butterflies at bay, controlling your emotions and the biorhythms.”
It helps that she lives within walking distance of McCann and golfs there regularly. Morin, a three-time champion, also won the tournament last summer, shooting an 84 at The Links at Unionvale.
Despite the swelter heat on Monday, she birdied the sixth and 14th holes to create separation. She realized after the 10th hole that she had a considerable lead, “but I knew that it couldn’t be taken for granted.”
Morin is a native of Canada and skiing was her first love. In fact, she insists she still is far better at that sport than golf. The 59-year-old only began golfing in 2010 and continues to learn and improve.
She plans to again work with animals, perhaps seeking a part-time position at a shelter or volunteering to help wildlife in the fall. But, until then...
“It takes time to work on your game and really get better,” Morin said. “And I’ve got the time and energy now to really focus on golf.”
