Windells is in its fifth week of summer snow camps, and Matt Roebke, who is currently at Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood in Oregon, filled us in on what conditions are looking like this summer.

For most North Americans, the idea of skiing in mid-July is almost mind-blowing, but Roebke ensured us it was not only possible, but perhaps even better than past years.

    Matt Roebke Q&A

What are conditions looking like currently?

"They're pretty good, compared to the past couple years. This is my third year being up here, but year one was pretty awesome for snow. Last year was a little tougher, but this year has been great. We're able to ride to the bottom of the hill still, which is pretty unreal."

    Are the temperatures pretty warm?

"It's not too bad. A couple weeks ago, it was super high. It was pretty nuclear everywhere. But the temps were not bad today. They were probably in the upper 60s, lower 70s up there. It hasn't been too bad up there, so far.

I hope everybody gets to ride here in the summer at some point. It is so sweet."

What are the vibes from the people skiing right now?

"Everybody's really stoked this year 'cause it's so good. There are three pipes right now that you can ride, which is unreal. Last year we had one pipe, and it was this super pipe that you had to get a ticket for, but it's all open now!"

What's the maintenance process like for the features?

"The cat operators will do that at night. They're just mowing the lawn, pretty much. They'll do that for the race side as well as the park. They'll recut some of the pipes.

I'm not sure if they'll recut the huge pipe that they just opened up this week, but the two smaller ones have been super well kept up with.

Same thing with all the other features. Everything gets kind of recut and just kind of put back together a little bit."

How long do you think the snow will be good for?

"I hope it's good. I hope it [lasts] through the fall, like [until] September when it starts to snow here again."

Is there anything that you think people should know about the conditions right now?

"I think you just have to experience it. it's such an amazing place to be. You get a different connection with nature, or something, up there. It's really unique because it brings so many people from snow and ski together.

It's the coolest place on earth in the summer."
