Powder Mountain, in Eden, Utah, is now under new ownership by Netflix co-founder and former CEO Reed Hastings. Powder has announced a new initiative to create a multi-use, open-air art museum with large-scale installations from iconic artists Jenny Holzer, Nancy Holt, James Turrell, and Paul McCarthy.

Watch a video from the Powder Art Foundation below.

Hastings is not alone in crafting Powder's future. Powder's new architecture partners include Reed Hilderbrand of the Storm King Art Center to work on landscape architecture, as well as Johnston Marklee of MCA Chicago for the visitor center.

A work from James Turrell will be one of Powder Mountain's art museum's permanent acquisitions. Turrell's exhibits are popular with art lovers and museum visitors due to their enveloping experience.

One of Turrell's walk-in light installation, Ganzfeld Apani (2011), which was originally commissioned for and displayed at the 54th Venice Biennale, is planned for installment in a trailside pavilion at Powder Mountain.

Additionally, Powder Mountain is collaborating with the Holt/Smithson Foundation for a major 1980s Nancy Holt work to be executed permanently at Powder Mountain.

Jenny Holzer will create a brand-new series of text-based engravings on rock, while Paul McCarthy will create an immersive installation based on the mythology of the American West.

McCarthy said in a press release sent to POWDER, "I grew up in Utah, and the influence of Utah and its mountains has been a critical part of my work. A core subject, sitting in both my subconscious and conscious mind. I am excited to have the opportunity to realize a work in that landscape and to be a part of building something special at Powder Mountain.”

Other artists in the first round of installations include EJ Hill, Arthur Jafa, Nikita Gale, Gala Porras-Kim, and Raven Halfmoon.

Reed Hastings, Chairman of Powder Mountain, explained that officials at Powder Mountain “aim to transform Powder into a multi-season destination that blends recreation, art, and meaningful connection for our entire community."

This is certainly a project to watch. Chris Benchetler has made moves combining skiing and art, noting that both are forms of creative expression. How a resort manages this combination will be interesting and, likely, of note to many people outside of the ski world or art world alone.
