Utah's 8th Annual World Record Shot-Ski Attempt Date Announced

Alcohol and Utah aren't usually mentioned in the same sentence (unless somebody is poking fun at the Beehive State's odd liquor laws), but when it comes to the world's largest shot-ski, Park City, Utah is a force to be reckoned with.

This will be the 8th annual Shot-Ski event hosted by the Park City Sunrise Rotary Club and High West Distillery. It will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, at 2 p.m. in the middle of Park City's Historic Main Street.

The 2023 event saw 1,363 shots of High West Double Rye whiskey consumed using a 2,950-foot-long shot-ski made of 551 skis joined end to end. The pictures are quite remarkable of nearly 1,500 Utahans blocking a popular roadway in the name of drinking a shot of liquor together. It's an odd tradition, but one that seemingly grows in popularity each Fall.

In keeping with tradition, the event will attempt to break the world record set during the previous year, but they're not hoping to just squeak by. Organizers are hoping that at least 1,385 shots will be consumed, exactly 22 more than last year.

"Park City Sunrise Rotary Club and High West Distillery welcome whiskey lovers to throw back for a cause at the 8th annual Park City Sunrise Shot SkiTM. The spirited fall tradition, whose proceeds benefit local grant programs of the Sunrise Rotary of Park City, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, at 2 p.m. down the center of Park City’s Historic Main Street.

The current world record was set at the 2023 event, when a 2,950-foot-long shot ski served 1,363 shots of High West Double Rye whiskey, used 551 skis end to end, and raised more than $40,000 for the Park City Sunrise Rotary Club grant program. This year’s event aims to set a new record by serving 1,385 shots and raising an ambitious $60,000."

The Park City Sunrise Rotary Club isn't the only competitor for the world's longest shot ski amongst America's historic ski towns. Ullr Fest is hosted each December in Breckenridge, Colorado and features a celebratory shot ski down Main Street. The drinks are supplied by Breckenridge Distillery and the Breckenridge Mountain Rotary.

Ullr Fest's shot-ski event will take place on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at 4:20 p.m. local time. The festival is hoping 1,370 people will turn out to smash Park City's standing record. You can register for the event here .

It appears that the great shot-ski rivalry will continue for another year between Park City, Utah and Breckenridge, Colorado. It's a battle of small margins, but one that is worth fighting. For pride and bragging rights, of course.

So, which iconic American mountain town will come out on top? We'll have to wait until after Breckenridge's event in December to know for sure, but my money is on the folks in Park City. After all, I heard a guitar player at a Park City bar once say, "When you're drinking in Park City, you're not drinking in Utah. Welcome."
