Utah's Largest Ski Resort Debuts Brightly-Colored Chairlift Towers

    By Matt Lorelli,

    2024-09-01

Powder Mountain, Utah (PowMow) is under the microscope this offseason as the resort prepares for its first Winter under a new private/public hybrid model (more on that later).

The resort shared an update video detailing the progress on the new Timberline and Paradise chairlifts that are expected to open this season. Among the updates is the first look at PowMow's new green and blue chairlift towers See below.

In addition to the well-produced video, Powder Mountain provided a short written update for each chair on a recent blog post. See below.

Construction Catch Up - August 29th

    Timberline:

The new Timberline lift is progressing smoothly with Skytrac’s team. Foundations for the top and bottom terminals have been set, with steel assembled and the top terminal fully completed. In just one morning, a helicopter placed all the towers and cross arms. Next up is finishing the bottom terminal installation.

    Paradise:

The Doppelmayr crew at Paradise has been busy excavating the new tower and terminal sites. With the area's rocky terrain, this has been no small task. The foundations for both the top and bottom terminals are in place, and the top terminal has been assembled. Next, they’ll set the concrete tower footings and install the bottom terminal.

    The Process of Flying Towers:

First we staged the towers and cross arms in a flat area. Then we had Skytrac’s highly skilled helicopter pilot scoop up and place each piece accordingly. At each tower there is a team of lift installers to ensure each piece goes in just right. The helicopter crew completed all tower installs on Timberline in just 1 morning!

As we mentioned earlier, Powder Mountain is drawing the attention of skiers across the country. Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings made international headlines in the Fall of 2023 by investing $100 million into the resort and becoming its primary shareholder and CEO.

Part of his plan for Powder Mountain to become a profitable business is to reserve the terrain off the Village Lift, Mary's Lift, and a yet-to-be-constructed lift on Raintree for private homeowners/members . The rest of PowMow's vast terrain, including the Paradise and Timberline lifts, will remain opened to the public.

The move has drawn intense criticism from locals who want to preserve the way PowMow used to operate. Unfortunately, at least according to Hastings, this model was unsuccessful and the resort was failing.

Powder Mountain is unique in that its first snowmaking systems were installed prior to last season. The coverage is minimal, but a step towards effective warm weather and rain mitigation that nearly every ski resort in the world is now required to have.

PowMow still relies on Mother Nature to blanket its 8,000+ acres of terrain, and while their reported average snowfall of 500 inches is questionable, there's plenty of The Greatest Snow on Earth to around. Heck, the place is called Powder Mountain after all.
