Nevada Ski Area Shares Encouraging Fire Update

A few days ago , things weren’t looking great for Sky Tavern, Nevada, a ski area popular among Reno residents. It faced the Davis Fire, which has caused several evacuation orders and burned over 5,000 acres. On Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a rare “Particularly Dangerous Situation” warning for Wednesday and cautioned that the Davis Fire could experience rapid growth.

However, yesterday, on social media, Sky Tavern noted that “we’re finally able to pause and take a much-needed breath thanks to the incredible progress firefighters made on the #DavisFire .

“Because of their tireless efforts, Sky Tavern has remained relatively unharmed as the fire threatened our perimeters daily,” the ski area added.

Despite the apparent lull, Sky Tavern remains closed for summer operations and at evacuation status. It’ll continue to provide updates via social media and on its website. “We thank our friends, members, neighbors, partners, and the community for their overwhelming support and can’t wait to see everyone on the mountain soon,” the ski area wrote.

Favorable weather conditions allowed firefighters to pull ahead of the Davis Fire on Thursday, the Reno Gazette Journal reports. The fire, which impacted numerous structures, is now 56% contained. Multiple evacuation warnings have been lifted.

Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, Nevada—just up the road from Sky Tavern—was also in the vicinity of the Davis Fire. It hasn’t provided a recent public update on Facebook or Instagram. Earlier this week, resort marketing director Mike Pierce said, “Key assets are being repositioned, and sprinklers are in place around the base lodges.” Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe’s webcams remain offline.

Elsewhere in the West, Mt. Baldy Resort, California—located near the perimeter of the 50,000-plus acre Bridge Fire—shared an update on Thursday.

The Bridge Fire moved through parts of Mountain High Resort, California, this week, but the ski area announced two days ago that all of its main buildings and lifts sustained little to no damage. “The resort is still assessing the situation but anticipates opening on time for the upcoming season,” a statement published by Mountain High reads.
