Keep Your Clips Up #21: Best Ski Videos of the Week

It was a busy ski news week, which, given the time of year, came as a surprise. On the clips end, things were firing, too. I won’t spoil anything, but one of our selections could be one of the tricks of the year—it might even be the trick of the year, depending on who you ask.

The rest rocks, too. A lot’s been said about the current state of skiing—it’s too busy, it’s too overcrowded, etc.—but at the elite level, I’d argue that things have never been better. Pros are embracing an enormous suite of disciplines from park to freeride, and, outside of competition, at least, creativity feels like a driving force, as it should be. That’s what pulling together and watching all these videos made me think about. Maybe they’ll create the same feeling for you, too. Now, without further adieu, let’s get into it.

Hunter Henderson Decides Physics Aren't Real

I’m not even sure what to say anymore. The level of park skiing is monstrous these days, and tricks that belong in video games are commonplace. This maneuver from Hunter Henderson at the Jossi Wells Invitational is easily in the running for best trick of the year. What’s it called? Funny you ask. I’m not really sure—it's a ridiculous combination of two tricks—but I’ll give it a shot. If we break it into separate moves, it sure looks like a cork 900 tail tap to switch butter 540, but I did see someone in a comments section trying to say it was double cork. Fair play. Regardless, though, whatever you want to call it, it's nuts.

    Alex Hall Stays Smooth

And now for something a little more laid back but equally easy on the eyes. Despite his height—the guy’s 6'4"—Alex Hall has a way of making everything look casual, smooth, and effortless. Rest assured, though, none of this is easy.

    Rock Dodgers Paradise

You ever watch a ski video that gets an audible reaction out of you? This one did it for me. At around the 1:38 mark, Henry Zakowski leaps in a tight rock slot, pops a few jump turns, chucks a neat 360, and narrowly avoids a rock in the landing. I gasped. The rest of the short POV edit is similarly technical, so if you’re into watching people themselves in truly uncomfortable situations, tune in.

    Floating With Tormod Frostad

Tormod Frostad floats. Some skiers land like they never took off in the first place. He’s one of them. In his latest clip offering, he displays his rail skiing mastery, but if you put him in front of an enormous booter, he’s a threat, too.

Thibault Magnin Goes For a Walk Through the Park

Speaking of floating, Thibault Magnin’s on a similar program. The Olympic-caliber skier went on a tear here, lacing mellow tricks with aplomb. He’s not just a park weapon, either. Recently, Magnin took a break from the freestyle thing to appear as a wildcard on the Freeride World Tour, but he really looks at home strolling through the terrain park.
