Utah Graced by First Snowfall of the Season

    By Matt Lorelli,

It feels like every western ski locale besides Utah had received their first snowfall of the season, and thanks to webcams at places like Alta Ski Area, POWDER can confirm that the Beehive State has finally joined in on the early season snow action.

Check out the images captured on Alta Ski Area's webcams on the morning of September 17, 2024.

Like most early-season storms, the snow line is clearly defined by elevation, and while there doesn't appear to be a significant amount of accumulated snow, more is expected through the weekend, as we discussed in an article late last week.

The first snowfall of the season can be the ultimate tease, as POWDER writer Ian Greenwood recently explained , but celebrations are always in order. It marks the unofficial end to summer for most skiers, and there are surely thousands in the Salt Lake City metro area that are waking up with smiles on their faces.

If you're a snowboarder, or frequent other ski resorts in the Wasatch, fear not, the first snowfall wasn't exclusive to Alta Ski Area. Check out snow's first cameo in a variety of webcams images compiled in the gallery below. We'll continue to update this gallery as more images are made available.

Brighton Resort, another popular ski area in Utah's Wasatch range, took to social media to share a drone video of snow dusting their highest peaks. See below. It's happening indeed!

The beginning of Utah's ski season is still two months away , but the first snowfall is a sign of better times to come. Enjoy the changing leaves of Fall while you can, winter is coming, and all of us here at POWDER are beyond excited.

If you're planning to venture out into the snow today, be safe, friends. Coverage will be undeniably thin and a few measly September turns aren't worth ruining your entire season. Stay tuned in here at POWDER for more updates throughout the week on Utah's first snowstorms. If predictions are correct, high elevation areas of places like Alta Ski Area could have as much as 10 inches of snow by the weekend.
