Popular Nevada Ski Area Left Untouched by Davis Fire

Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, a ski area popular among Reno, Nevada area skiers, has confirmed that it was untouched by the Davis Fire, which burned dangerously close to the ski area’s boundaries.
“We are incredibly and forever grateful to the fire crews and emergency personnel who worked hard to contain the fire,” the ski area wrote in an update on social media.
The Davis Fire reached nearly 6,000 acres, burned 14 structures, and forced the State of Nevada to declare a state of emergency. It is now 92% contained. Mt. Rose Highway has reopened, and all evacuations were lifted on Sunday, September 15th. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
As the fire raged, Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe prepared for a worst-case scenario. “Key assets are being repositioned, and sprinklers are in place around the base lodges,” said resort marketing director Mike Pierce. On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, the National Weather Service issued a rare Particularly Dangerous Situation Red Flag warning , indicating heightened fire danger. Stewart Turner, a fire behaviorist, cautioned that the fire could expand seven miles northward, putting hundreds of homes at risk.
Yet, as the week progressed, the lines around the Davis Fire, which reached 37% containment on Thursday, held. The same day, Sky Tavern, a ski area near Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, reported that it was relatively unharmed .
Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe’s webcams have come back online after a temporary hiatus during the Davis Fire and depict untouched grass and trees. A mixture of snow and rain is possible at the ski area this evening and tomorrow, which, given the intense fire conditions of last week, must feel like a godsend.
Several fires remain active throughout the West. The nearly 55,000-acre Bridge Fire has forced the closure of Mt. Baldy Ski Resort, California. While the ski area expects to open for the winter season, it noted in a social media update that the ongoing closure is leading to a significant loss of September revenue and asked patrons to help by “purchasing pre-season tickets, season passes, or gift cards.”
“Additionally, donations are being accepted through the Mt. Baldy Village Church to assist those affected by the fire,” the ski area added.
Big Bear Mountain Resort—threatened by the Line Fire—announced this morning that “things are looking up… thanks to the tireless efforts of our staff and response crews.” Tee times at the Bear Mountain Golf Course are scheduled to resume this Friday, but operations at Snow Summit and Snow Valley, including all bike trails, Scenic Sky Chair, and base area activities, are suspended until further notice. The Line Fire is now 49% contained.
