Vancouver Ski Area Wants You To Decorate Their New Gondola

Ever wanted your art on a gondola cabin? Now's your chance.

Grouse Mountain Resort, British Columbia, is running an art contest with a unique prize: winning creations will adorn the resort's new gondola, slated to open soon. Grand Prize winners will also receive $2000 and two invitations to the exclusive Gondola Launch Party.

Artworks should be inspired by "Memories of a Lifetime at Grouse Mountain." There will be five Grand Prizes awarded. The competition is open to all artists who have a personal experience with Grouse Mountain—complete submission guidelines are available here.

"We can’t wait to see everyone’s visual interpretations of Grouse, and to be able to have the winners showcased on the gondola cabins against the backdrop of the Mountain, the city and the sea will make the gondola opening even more special,” said Madelaine Twomey, Grouse Mountain Resort's communications manager.

To host the contest, Grouse Mountain teamed up with Carson Ting, a visual artist based in the Vancouver, British Columbia, area who owns and runs Chairman Ting, an award-winning design studio known for working with numerous big names, including Microsoft, Adidas Originals, and The Cartoon Network. Ting will create his own artwork for the Grouse Gallery before joining the judging panel.

"As soon as Grouse shared the idea with me, I knew I wanted to include my family in my creative process,” said Ting. “We’ve shared some amazing days together at Grouse Mountain seeing the bears, playing in the Kids Tree Canopy, eating poutine in the Chalet, and I want to highlight all of it in my art piece.”

“Being able to see my artwork wrapped on a gondola cabin is going to be so special, especially when my kids see it for the first time knowing they were a huge inspiration for the piece, it’s going to be something we remember forever,” he added.

The new gondola features 27 eight-person cabins, 14 towers, a trip time of 5.5 minutes, and an hourly uphill capacity of 1,000 persons. Tower assembly and line work are underway, and system testing is scheduled for this fall. Grouse Mountain aims to open the gondola during the 2024-2025 winter season.

The $35 million project will replace the Blue Skyride—which opened in 1966—modernizing the connection between Grouse Mountain's parking lot and its piste. The new gondola will more than double its predecessors' uphill capacity.

Grouse Mountain is one of three ski resorts in the Vancouver area, joined by Cypress Mountain and Mt. Seymour. It opened its first chairlift in 1949 and remains an easily accessed skiing destination for Vancouver skiers. You can catch glimpses of the sprawling metropolis below from Grouse Mountain's slopes.

More changes are coming to Grouse Mountain. This summer, the resort announced via press release that, in spring 2025, it will open a lift-assisted bike park as part of a $9 million investment that includes the construction of a mountain coaster. The new trails are being created alongside Gravity Logic, a firm that helped build Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia's acclaimed bike park.

"The addition of the gondola has allowed us to explore a whole mountain of opportunities not previously available with our current Skyride," said Michael Cameron, the president of Grouse Mountain, in the press release. "It's an exciting time for Grouse, and we're so happy to be sharing these new amenities with our community."
