The folks of Mammoth Lakes, California were surprised to see the highest peaks of the Eastern Sierra dusted by a summer snowstorm this morning, September 20, 2024.

Samantha Lindberg, of Mammoth Lakes Tourism, filmed the tranquil video below from the Mammoth Lakes Basin in the early morning hours. A misty morning on the lake with a snow capped peak? Sign us up.

Mammoth Mountain, the popular ski resort and main tourist attraction of Mammoth Lakes, saw fresh snow fall overnight as well. Based on the resort's various webcams, it appears that most of the accumulated snow melted off in morning hours of September 20th, but a light dusting remains in the shadows.

Mammoth is projected to open for the Winter '24/'25 season on November 15, 2024, conditions and weather permitting.

Take a look at the images captured by Cody Mathison via Mammoth Mountain below. The storm only produced a very light dusting, but snow is snow!

Hundreds of miles away, Banff Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mt. Norquay of Alberta, Canada are all reporting fresh snowfall overnight as well. Their storm produced quite a bit more accumulation, but it's September, and any measurable snowfall is worth celebrating no matter how measly it might seem.
