What is POWDER's 'Not Another Gear Guide'?

There was a time when the print buyer’s guide was the authority—when skiers would flip through the reviews as they were getting boots fitted and decide which skis they wanted to pull off the shop wall. In 2024, all that information is available to every 9-year-old grom with an iPad—complete with links and videos—long before the issue even goes to the printers. Today, print means something different. It’s no longer a means to disseminate information, but rather a place to become immersed in stories and photography. Skiers looking for that sort of early season stoke may rightfully see a cover teasing the year’s best skis, boots and bindings and think: not another gear guide.

So when we started planning for this first issue, we set out to create exactly that: Not Another Gear Guide. We are pumped to be putting out print issues again, and doing so with higher quality and more content than ever before. We don’t see the benefit of pages upon pages of regurgitated catalog information. Instead we focus on the innovations and the innovators that make the ski industry what it is, and are driving it forward. Rather than blast you with 400 ski graphics, we introduce you to the eccentric minds behind skiing’s most striking visuals.

We present questions you might not have known you need answers to. What steps do adaptive skiers need to take to find—and often create—the gear they need? (Even MacGyver would be wowed). What happens to old nylon fishing nets? (You may be wearing them). Where did all that colorful gear skiers rocked in the 80s go? (We found a bunch of it in a basement near Stevens Pass). Why would anyone be making skis in Dubai? (It has nothing to do with indoor skiing, it turns out).

What skis should I buy this year? That last one we won’t try to answer for you (though we do give you the Cliffs Notes on about 30 of our favorite items from our 2025 gear test at Sunshine Village ). What we offer instead are the in depth stories and stunning photography that you just won’t find in another gear guide.
