Wyoming Ski Area Won't Open for Second Consecutive Season

Sleeping Giant Ski Area , a small family-friendly hill near Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, announced on September 24, 2024 that they will not operate for the second consecutive season.
The ski are did not operate last season due to p oor natural snowfall , but is citing different reasons for calling this season in late-September. Sleeping Giant explains that the combination of cancelling last season, the damage from a "small flood" this summer, and the vandalization of one of its chairlifts is too much for the resort to overcome prior to the Winter '24/'25 season.
The resort goes into further detail in a long statement published to their Facebook page. The following is an excerpt from the statement that explains their decision to not operate this winter:
"We are sad to announce that we have made the decision to not open for the 24/25 Winter Season. We recognize that this will be a huge disappointment for many in our community and we share that sentiment, however after speaking with staff we feel this is the most responsible choice. As you know we faced a lack of snow last winter, a small flood this spring, and most recently vandalism to our Big Horn lift in August involving the brand-new communication line that we purchased for it the previous year. None of these problems are insurmountable, but taken together with the need to hire many seasonal staff made it clear that rushing to try to get open for the season did not make sense."
Sleeping Giant won't open in Winter '24/'25, but has confirmed their intention to open next season. The season off will give the ski area time to further train their employees, make significant upgrades to their lodge, and repair the mountain's chairlifts and infrastructure, according to the statement.
The ski area is refunding all season passes, and advises pass holders to look for an email with more information in the near future. Pass holders can email Jonathan at gm@skisg.com, if they have additional questions or concerns.
All of us here at POWDER Magazine wish Sleeping Giant well, and hope to see the ski area back up and running in 2025.
