New Ski Movie Without Snow Is Exceptional

Skiing, in a conventional sense, relies on snow.

The construction of skis funnels towards this basic fact—the slick bases, the sharp edges, and the snappy camber all exist to address different themes of one purpose, facilitating everything from racing to powder skiing.

But for Buldozlife , a European crew of skiers who create ski films and edits together, those design elements are more of a suggestion than a rule. Concrete is slippery, too.

When summer arrives and the snow melts, they don't toss all their gear in the closet and pick up trail running. Instead, they put their skis through different, unseasonal paces, sliding down stair sets, leaping into narrow channels, and navigating dry, dusty trails as if they were big mountain lines.

The latest fruit of these endeavors is FBPC 3 , the third release in a line of videos documenting Buldozlife's summertime activities. The second release, BPC 2 , went a bit viral, netting over 100,000 views on YouTube, which—for a crew that hews closer to the core freestyle and street strata of skiing—indicated that a more mainstream nerve had been struck. In a ski media landscape dominated by pristine powder fields and perfect conditions, the BPC series delivered a different, wildly entertaining vision.

The popularity and creation of Buldozlife's summer skiing videos begged more than a few questions, so we emailed them to get in the know. Here are a few responses from Blasco, a member of the crew.

This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

We have to ask—how beat up were you guys after filming FBPC 3 ? Were there any notable slams?

"This year was the most painful one. We had two major crashes: Sleepy took a big crash at the start, the metal stairs. He saw black for a minute. And I broke my left wrist badly on "la mega down," the huge grass downhill, which put an end to my BPC season. But to be fair, we went into those spots with not enough time and practice (doing the spot from a less sketchy start a few times, before actually doing it the way we want.) So yeah, we were a bit stupid. And had to pay the consequences."

What prompted the start of the BPC series? Did the Hood Crew inspire you?

"A group of skiers (Hoblitzelle, Krypto, Meeks, etc.) came to Leysin (Switzerland) for a week (during the first Buldoz Invitational) and rented a chalet close to where we lived. As I was going home from the slopes, I saw that they were filming something just in front of their chalet. Sanch, one of them, was on a one meter log, jumped from it, and skied a sketchy grass downhill but took a beautiful slam.

He did it again and landed it. I thought this was so lit. Come May, we didn't have snow anymore, and so with Sleepy, we decided, on a rainy day, to try that shit. It was fun, we did an insta edit and people liked it. We had a pretty good season but wanted more, so Sleepy, Gilles, and I thought we could do a summer movie. Skiing everything we could think of, and for me, especially, landing in water. (I love it). And voila BPC was born.

The Hood Crew is always an inspiration. They were my favorite crew when I was younger. But I don't think they were a specific inspiration for the first BPC, more a subconscious one. We did rewatch Freed's videos many times, especially when we were doing the second one. And we wanted to feature ScrappyJoe (We still want to, and will if we do one last movie)."

There are a couple spots you can ski in the summer in Europe—why ride dirt and concrete instead?

"There are glaciers and fridges, they are fun to ride but you can't make a movie on them. And it's really expensive: pass, place to sleep, etc… BPC is a warm sport, Glaciers and fridges aren't. I don't really want to be cold during the summer. BPC is street skiing, you can't ski spots with snow during the summer. It's the freedom you can't get on a glacier or in a fridge."

On that note, was filming FBPC 3 actually fun? Or did you guys just endure it to put out a unique video project?

"It's really fun. Otherwise, we wouldn't do it. The only frustrating thing is finding the spot. Good BPC spots are really hard to find. And if you are doing a spot that doesn't work, it's not fun. The skiing, in itself, is not comfortable (you can't carve, slide, etc.), so you don't take pleasure like skiing on snow, but the adrenaline rush you get, and intense joy when you land it is just like a street spot. BPC is street skiing."

If you could give one piece of advice to someone planning a summer street skiing mission, what would it be?

"Start close to where you live. It will be much easier to find good spots. And at night you can go back home and sleep well, not in a tent in a parking lot, or even a bad mattress without a tent. And really important, if you jump in water and you can't stand in it, use a lifejacket. We almost lost a friend (Baked), he started to drown but was able to take his skis off, which are now lost in a river."
