Mt. Mansfield, Vermont's tallest peak at 4,395 feet above sea level, just recorded its first observable snowfall for the Winter '24/'25 season.
The first flakes were spotted and captured by Stowe Mountain Resort Lift Operations employee Jack Stanton in the early morning hours of October 9, 2024. See below.
Like many first snowfalls of the season, Mt. Mansfield and Stowe's was just a flurry that accumulated on colder surfaces, but as we say here at POWDER— snow is snow!
Temperatures are expected to be quite chilly at Stowe through the weekend with highs in the upper-40s and lows hovering around the freezing mark. Don't be surprised if the resort tests their snowmaking machines in the next week or so.
A Vail Resorts employee told POWDER in an email that, "Stowe Mountain Resort will utilize its state-of-the-art snowmaking system to open for the 2024/25 winter season as soon as conditions allow." If colder weather prevails, Stowe's opening day could be much sooner than expected.
Stowe is using the first flakes of the season to remind skiers that Epic Pass prices will increase tomorrow, October 10, 2024. So, if you're a Vermonter or East Coaster that needed an excuse to finally pull the trigger on that pass, let this be your sign.
Stowe joins a growing list of ski resorts from across the country that have recorded their first flakes of the season. The buzz and excitement for winter seems to be growing with each occurrence.
Mt. Mansfield and northern Vermont's peaks are on watch for more snow tonight as temperatures are expected to once again dip below freezing. Keep on the lookout for your favorite ski resorts in the region to celebrate the flakes with a social media post tomorrow, October 10, 2024.
Or, just keep it here with us at POWDER as we will continue to cover early-season snowfall across the country. The hype for the season is building, and we're dedicated to making sure that you don't miss a beat of it.
