Ramey Newell isn't your average documentary filmmaker.

She and her colleagues spent five years working on a story about wolves in Alaska. It's called A Good Wolf , and while it's remarkable in its reporting on the human-animal situation, it's a remarkable statement about wilderness and wild things.

    Why not average?

This film has a cadence, a repetition, and a visual power that many documentaries about wild places lack—yes, I said that. It's clear the filmmakers care for the land and the wildness as much as they want to delve into the issue at hand: wolves. Maybe more.

And, it meters out the human stuff (like indoor meetings) with the animal activities, which can be as slow at what the humans are up to.

    It's a glorious visual and thought-provoking feast.

Now that wolves have been reintroduced to Colorado, Newell has some interesting comments on wolves, people, and the public process.

Newell will be appearing at Mountainfilm in Telluride in May.

I got in touch with Newell yesterday, and despite technology being what it is, this recording is rough. It was done very much on the fly (Ramey was traveling; I was pet-wrangling).

But I reckon it's worth a listen if you're interested in filmmaking, wolves, and public lands and the incredibly complicated but massively important public lands processes.

"Mountainfilm is delighted to present the world premiere of A Good Wolf , particularly given its regional relevance to the recent reintroduction of gray wolves to Colorado," Suzan Beraza, Mountainfilm festival director, told me via email. "The film skillfully delves into the potential challenges and opportunities for resolution surrounding this important issue."

If you think you have an opinion on wolves, I recommend you see this film. Exact screening dates have not been announced, so watch the Mountainfilm website for updates.

As noted, Newell will be on stage in Telluride. This will definitely be sold out, and I suspect at this point, Mountainfilm might schedule other events with Newell.

Thanks, Ramey. Good luck in the San Juans.

    See you there!
