The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP; aka "The Park") have announced that two favorite high-country Colorado roads will remained closed through the Memorial Day weekend.

Trail Ridge Road across the top of The Park and Colo. 82 from Twin Lakes over Independence Pass simply have too much snow.

RMNP said in a recent notice that snow removal started in mid-April but the snowpack is so deep that a Memorial Day opening just isn't in the cards.

"Due to ongoing and forecasted winter weather conditions at higher elevations in RMNP, Trail Ridge Road will not be opening this holiday weekend. Current vehicle closure points on Trail Ridge Road are at Many Parks Curve and at Colorado River Trailhead," an announcement from RMNP said.

Same deal at Independence Pass. Too much snow, despite a recent bombing effort by CDOT. The agency threw 50 "turkey bombs" at various cornices on May 14.

There have been no opening estimates for either road.

Additionally, Guanella Pass (the road south out of Georgetown) and the Mount Blue Sky road are closed.
