Town Of Alta Opposes Proposed Little Cottonwood Canyon Gondola

The proposed gondola up Little Cottonwood Canyon has received a lot of press recently and is a controversial topic within the Utah community. Different individuals, groups, and organizations have different stances on whether the proposed gondola is the best option for addressing the ongoing traffic issues in the Wasatch.

Recently, the Town of Alta publicly rejected the idea of the gondola, urging the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to consider other options. Given that Alta would be one of the primary locations the gondola served, this is a pretty big step.

Wasatch Backcountry Alliance, a local organization that advocates for backcountry recreation in the Wasatch, offered their take on Alta's decision in a recent Instagram post. Here's what they had to say:

WBA has regularly attended Alta Town Council meetings and provided comments on their resolution.

Like the council, WBA fully supports Phase 1 (enhanced bussing) and the need to track metrics to determine the success of bussing before moving forward with the gondola, which UDOT is currently not planning on tracking.

We both support a carrying capacity study to better understand visitation and long-term transportation options in addition to common-sense solutions, such as mandatory traction laws and enforcement.
