As winter draws to a close, I've found myself reflecting more on the highs and lows of the season, what I learned and how I grew my ski skills, and what I think some of my goals for next season will be. The Salt Lake Snowcast returned in early April after some weeks off for a cool episode discussing avalanche education and backcountry mentorship, which is a highly relevant topic for all types of skiers.

Heading into the backcountry can be intimidating. It requires technical knowledge about snow and avalanches, solid fitness, a good sense of direction and ability to read maps, and a flexibility that allows you to take whatever happens in stride and problem solve as needed. Having good mentors can be a really key part of growing as a backcountry skier.

I feel really grateful that I've found some awesome friends and mentors in the Wasatch who I can ski with and learn from. AND it can be a scary prospect to acknowledge what you don't know and intentionally seek knowledge from those around you.

If growing as a backcountry skier is important to you, this Salt Lake Snowcast episode is certainly worth a listen. Host Nick McEachern sits down with local guide and avalanche forecaster Kiira Antenucci to "chat about how to make the jump from intermediate to expert, ways to find mentorship and ski partners," and more.
