A shooting involving multiple Columbus police officers has left one man dead early Tuesday morning in the University District.

Assistant Police Chief LaShanna Potts confirmed the suspect was shot and killed in an alley next to a Community Crime Patrol station around 1:30 a.m. Police are investigating at an apartment across the street, where the situation began.

Officers initially responded to a call about a man threatening to harm himself and others in the apartment. After clearing the area and a second call at 10:30 p.m., officers found the man with an edged weapon. He refused help again. Shortly after, he left the apartment, heading towards an alleyway, and approached officers holding multiple weapons. Officers fired, and the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the case, as with all officer-involved shootings. Police have yet to release the suspect’s name while the investigation continues.
