The Poynette softball team is moving on in the postseason, after taking on some tough competition to wrap up the regular season.

On Tuesday, May 21, the Pumas clipped Clinton in a 2-1 WIAA regional victory, with Poynette scoring the winning run in the fifth.

“Livi McLane came in to pinch hit for Bella Severson in bottom of the fifth and led off with a bunt,” said Matt Ramberg, head coach for Poynette. “(Addison) Mackey followed up with a bunt hit with a wild throw to first, which advanced McLane to third and a wild throw back to the pitchers circle resulted in McLane scoring for the second and winning run of the game.”

McCaffery went 1-for-3 with a stolen base, as did Grace Gavinski, who also had an RBI. Morgan Gunderson also went 1-for-3, while going four innings in the pitcher’s circle and allowing just one earned run. McCaffery got the win, going three innings with five strikeouts.

Against Jefferson, the No. 6 ranked team in Division 2, the Pumas couldn’t get much going offensively in a 2-0 non-conference loss on Tuesday, May 14. Gunderson went the distance, allowing two earned runs. Mackey and McCaffery both went 1-for-3, as Mackey had a double.

Poynette bounced back two days later, beating Baraboo 6-2 in another non-conference affair. McCaffery had a huge game, belting two home runs and doubling in a 4-for-4 performance, with three RBIs. Going 2-for-4, Mackey scored two runs, while Ayla Johnson and Maggie Steinhorst both went 2-for-3. McCaffery was the winning pitcher.
