After starting the season with an offensive surge, the lineup for the Poynette Home Talent team cooled off a bit this past week.

In an 8-2 loss to Middleton in Night League play on Thursday, June 6, the Indians were held to four hits, as Ian Nowell blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning to account for all of Poynette’s scoring.

“We’ve been hitting the ball pretty well lately, but tonight the Middleton pitcher was able to almost shut us down,” said Poynette head coach Davy Tomlinson. “We continue to play solid defense, and our pitchers are doing a good job of minimizing walks.”

The four hits represented Poynette’s lowest hitting output of the season.

On the mound, Kyle Bestul took the loss, going three innings and allowing four earned runs. He struck out two and walked five, while Dacota Potter lasted two innings and gave up four earned runs. Nowell tossed a scoreless for the Indians, whose hurlers only issued two walks.

In the field, Poynette committed no errors.

Cottage Grove 15, Poynette 8Stranding 17 baserunners, the Indians couldn’t get as many clutch hits as they needed to overcome an offensive explosion by Cottage Grove, who banged out 23 hits.

Leading 9-5, Cottage Grove added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning for some insurance.

Korey Ryan went 2-for-4, with a home run, for Poynette, while Riley Radewan went 2-for-5 and Potter had two hits in three trips to the plate. Nowell had a double.

Andy Knuteson took the loss, pitching five innings, and Radewan threw four innings. They combined for two strikeouts.

“We did a good job of getting plenty of baserunners, but unfortunately we left too many on base,” said Tomlinson. “They can certainly hit the ball. They’ve recruited and imported a group of players over the last couple of years and they are very good.”

Now 1-2 in league play, Poynette is 0-2 in Night League, 2-1 in exhibition play and 3-5 overall.

Poynette travels to Cross Plains at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Monona on Sunday at 1 p.m.
