Stranding 13 baserunners, the DeForest Deacons lost a late lead in a 4-3 Eastern Section Home Talent loss to Poynette on Wednesday, June 19. It was a makeup game from a postponement earlier this season.

The Deacons went up 1-0 in the top of the second inning on a home run, but the Indians tied it in the third when Andy Knuteson doubled and scored on an error.

An RBI single and a bases-loaded walk put DeForest back on top 3-1 in the seventh, but Knuteson drove in a run in the bottom of the frame to pull Poynette back to within a run. Doubles by Ian Nowell and Carson Frost tied it for the Indians in the eighth.

In the top of the ninth, Riley Radewan stuck out three batters in the ninth on 11 pitches to set the stage for Poynette to walk it off. Joel Thimsen led off with a single and Knuteson and Kory Ryan walked to load the bases with one out. Nowell’s RBI single plated Thimsen for the winning run.

In addition to going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, Knuteson pitched eight innings, striking out three and walking six while allowing three earned runs. Nowell and Thimsen both went 2-for-5, as Knuteson, Nowell and Frost all had doubles.

“Andy and Riley did a great job on the mound tonight against a very good hitting DeForest squad,” said Davy Tomlinson, manager for Poynette. “It always helps to be backed up by perfect defense. We were fortunate to come out of this one on top tonight. Our games with them are always close.”

In the field, Poynette committed no errors.

Kaden Roberts paced the Deacons with a 3-for-5 performance, while Sam Vomhof, Nolan Hawk, Josh Jansen, Cody Donahue and NJ Delmore all had hits for DeForest, who fell to 1-4 overall.

Poynette is 2-3 in league play, 1-3 in Night League action and 2-1 in exhibition play for an overall mark of 5-7.

On Thursday, Poynette hosts Ashton at 7 p.m. in a Night League contest, with a road game at Montello coming up Sunday at 1 p.m.

    Monona 8, Poynette 3

Walks hurt the Indians in a Night League loss on Thursday.

“We played great defense again, but Monona was able to take advantage of too many free passes,” said Tomlinson.

Down 7-0 in the fifth, Poynette plated three runs in the bottom of the frame, but that was all the scoring for the Indians. Chase Hansen led off with a single, Thimsen walked and Frost and Ryan followed with RBI singles. Jake Keller reached on an error to score Frost. Ryan and Hansen both had two hits.

Dacota Potter took the loss on the hill, going four innings with four strikeouts and four walks, giving up three earned runs. Nowell tossed an inning, allowing four earned runs, while Hansen pitched two innings, walking four and fanning two, while giving up one earned run.

On offense, Poynette went three up, three down in three of the seven innings. Poynette pitchers issued 10 walks.
