Last month, Prairie Village city leaders asked Republic for better communication after a string of missed trash pickups.

According to City Clerk Adam Geffert, who manages the city’s contract with Republic, in the first six months of this year, the City of Prairie Village fined Republic Services more than $25,000 for missed trash pickups.

Since city leaders asked Republic Services for better communication in June, Geffert said service has improved compared to the issues the city experienced in May.

Even with the improvements, the city still had to impose fines for missed trash pick-ups for June, but they were significantly lower than the previous month.

Geffert said overall communication and service have improved since the June meeting when trash pick-up issues were discussed.

FOX4 asked Geffert on Monday if trash pickup issues have continued to be persistent for residents.

“Yes, but less so than what we were dealing with previously. The biggest problem we’ve had with Republic over the past few years is that service will improve for a period of time, and then we’ll go right back to having the same problems,” Geffert said. “I’m hopeful that will not be the case moving forward, but I’m not confident yet!”

According to Geffert, the areas of the city that are still having the most problems are Wards 3 and 6 generally east of Mission Road between 71st Street and Somerset Drive.

FOX4 reached out to Republic Services for comment. They said “”We are committed to providing an exceptional customer experience and will continue to work with the City of Prairie Village to ensure uninterrupted service.”

Prairie Village residents who miss trash, recycling, or yard waste pickups should make a report by contacting Republic Services at 816-521-3122.
