Archaeologists in Maryland discovered the skeleton of a teenage boy, believed to be an early colonist who journeyed to the New World around 400 years ago.

The remains were found at the Historic St. Mary's City archaeological site, where the first capital of Maryland once stood.

The boy's body was buried in an unusual position, suggesting he was unceremoniously dumped in the grave. His right leg was broken in two places, indicating a recent injury at the time of his death. Researchers believe he may have been buried during rigor mortis, which caused his body to stiffen in a contorted position.

The adolescent's physical characteristics did not align with typical burial practices, and there were no clues about his identity. It is speculated that he arrived in Maryland during the 1630s as an indentured servant and may have worked without his family.

He likely died soon after arriving in the New World. The skeleton will be taken to the Smithsonian Institution for additional forensic study before being reburied at a more secure location at the archaeological site.

Travis Parno, acting executive director of Historic St. Mary's City, expressed a desire to honor the boy's memory and celebrate his life.

Seeing the individual almost face to face has been a profound experience. I'm drawn to want to know more about him, celebrate him and honor him by bringing him some notoriety or attention since he's not the type of person that winds up in history books- Travis Parno

The discovery offers a profound insight into the lives of early colonists and the challenges they faced in the New World.
