Rare ‘Whale Ballet’ Captured by New Hampshire Fisherman

The big story

Robert Addie, a seasoned commercial fisherman from New Hampshire, was left in awe after witnessing a beautiful spectacle off the shore of Cape Cod in an astonishing display of nature's wonders. Three gorgeous humpback whales appeared in near-perfect synchrony in the waters of Massachusetts.

Marine biologists are stunned by this rare display of unison, and are a "bit jealous" of Addie, according to the Associated Press(AP).

Addie was celebrating his 59th birthday with his children as well as his safe return as a part of a humanitarian aid mission in war-torn Ukraine.

Addie shared the video on his Facebook page.

Why it matters?

Humpback whales are popular among whale watchers for their unique surface behaviors, including their famous backflip. But it is difficult even for professionals to catch a glimpse of the whales' unique dive.

Three whales diving backward in unison is a 'once in a lifetime' phenomenon.

Addie told the AP that he was trying to film some humpback whales from their boat, but he wasn't having any luck. Then, he finally got what he called a "whale ballet."
