Nature has transformed North Dakota into a sea of vibrant yellow as countless sunflowers bloomed across the state.

Nestled against the Canadian border, the far northern Great Plains region has long been a renowned sunflower producer. This year, farmers have cultivated an impressive 625,000-acre expanse adorned with these sunny flowers, used for nut butter, cooking oil, confectionery seeds, and bird food.

The sunflower show begins in late July and graces the landscape throughout August. The North Dakota tourism office has created a comprehensive map for travelers to locate blooming sunflower fields. It provides GPS coordinates, directions, and real-time bloom updates.

Scattered across the state, the sunflower fields follow unique blooming timelines. The map, updated weekly, aids travelers in planning visits. While admiring the beauty from roadsides is encouraged, entering fields without consent is not.

Some farms, like Nelson’s Pumpkin Patch, welcome enthusiasts with festivities like the Sunflower Shindig, offering sunflower bouquets, photography, and sunflower-themed activities. You can check out the details below if you're planning a visit.

Select locations gift free sunflower seeds as souvenirs. To celebrate the bloom, North Dakota Tourism and the National Sunflower Association inaugurated National Sunflower Day on August 5.

Despite challenges, amidst a national decrease in the area for sunflower cultivation, North Dakota’s fields showcase its commitment to the sunflower industry.
