Nearly two dozen individuals who recently participated in a grueling Tough Mudder competition at Sonoma Raceway in California have fallen ill with a range of symptoms, including bumpy, pus-filled skin rashes and fevers. The event, which took place on August 19 and 20, is known for its challenging obstacle courses designed to test participants' physical endurance and teamwork.

Within 24 hours of the competition's conclusion, participants began reporting health issues, prompting the County of Sonoma Department of Health Services to issue an advisory on August 23.

The advisory warned of a potential bacterial infection linked to the event and urged all Tough Mudder participants to be vigilant.

Sonoma County Department of Health Services has received dozens of phone calls and emails from participants either concerned about their health or reporting symptoms. As of now, we have received seven positive cases of bacterial infections from Aeromonas- Matt Brown, Sonoma County, Spokesperson

Aeromonas bacteria, typically found in water, can lead to various infections, ranging from mild to severe wound infections, bloodstream infections, and even sepsis.

Most affected individuals have symptoms including fever, muscle aches, headaches, and pus-filled skin bumps, which could indicate a range of conditions, from minor ailments to more severe infections.

The health department is actively encouraging clinicians to obtain cultures from infected patients and report the results.

Tough Mudder has also issued advice to participants, advising anyone with symptoms to seek medical attention promptly. Staph infections, caused by Staphylococcus bacteria, are another potential concern, as they can cause skin eruptions and more severe infections.

Health officials are working diligently to identify the source of the outbreak and provide appropriate treatment to those affected.

Participants are urged to remain vigilant and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms, given the uncertain nature of the infections.
