Barton Mines inducted into state's Historic Business Preservation Registry
NORTH RIVER | Sen. Dan Stec (R,C-Queensbury) presented the management and staff of Barton Mines Corporation (Barton) with a certificate inducting the company into the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry. Stec nominated Barton for this honor, citing its lengthy history and the continued importance the company has in the region through its operations in the towns of Johnsburg and Indian Lake and the City of Glens Falls.
Homer FD praises teamwork in Monday fire
HOMER, NY (CortacaToday) – The Homer Fire Department is crediting teamwork in saving a home from being destroyed. Firefighters were called to a structure fire off Route 281 around 7:30 p.m. Monday. Responding Homer and Preble Fire units prevented the outbuilding blaze from spreading to an adjacent house. Nearly a dozen departments and other emergency agencies were on standby for mutual aid.

Recent Cyber Attacks Threaten Hudson Valley, New York Infrastructure
The Hudson Valley has fallen victim to a slew of cyber attacks in recent months, compromising important information from both local organizations and individuals. Cyberattack complaints in New York state increased 53% between 2016 and 2022, jumping from 16,426 incidents in 2016 to 25,112 in 2022, according to the FBI. The number of attacks targeting critical infrastructure in New York state nearly doubled to 83 in the first half of 2023 compared to 48 during the entirety of 2022 according to a report released by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

Syracuse, N.Y. – A man kidnapped a couple who was letting him crash on their couch after he became upset over a missing free phone, a prosecutor said. Deshawn Apgar, 34, was scheduled to be arraigned on first- and second-degree kidnapping charges Tuesday but failed to come to court. Judge Gordon Cuffy issued a warrant for the man’s arrest.
