In conjunction with the annual Run for the Roses 5K event held each spring, high school seniors had an opportunity to compete for scholarship funds to be applied to higher education expenses at the institution of their choice.

Applicants must be a resident of Jefferson Davis County, a high school senior graduating in 2024 and must be enrolled in Jefferson Davis County High School or Prentiss Christian School.

Along with the completed application, applicants wrote an essay of 200 words answering, “What advancement would you like to see in your community that would encourage you to return to Jefferson Davis County after graduating college?”

Receiving the award from Jefferson Davis County High School was Taylor Copeland.

Copeland is planning to attend Alcorn State University in the fall after completing Air Force Reserves bootcamp this summer.

Zoie Herrington was presented the award at Prentiss Christian School. Herrington will continue her education at Jones College.

Scholarships were chosen based on the essay and how the student defended her answer. It was not based on ACT score or grade point average.

“The Run for the Roses committee is excited to be able to assist our local students in their future endeavors as they further their education,” said Tracy Waits. “We appreciate our sponsors and all those who help make the Run successful each year.”

Winners of the $750 scholarship were announced at senior awards day at JDCHS and PCS. Scholarship money will be sent to the college of the recipient’s choice upon proof of registration.
