The Butternut High School varsity girls basketball team lost a close 54-51 home game against Drummond on Feb. 10, preventing an opportunity to move into a second place tie in the Northern Lights Conference.

It was a Friday night battle of two teams at the top of the conference and it was a close game all the way through, said Butternut Coach Troy Scherwinski. Neither team led by more than 4 or 5 points the entire game, both teams played aggressively and were in foul trouble as a result, and both teams had a chance to win it at the end when Butternut came up empty in its last two possessions and Drummond hit one free throw on each possession to seal the win.

“I’m proud of the effort by our girls,” Scherwinski said. “We played hard and put ourselves in a position to win. It just didn’t go our way. I’m sure we’ll each search for that one thing that could have changed the outcome. We’ll have another opportunity.”

Butternut senior Jersey Polencheck led all scorers with 24 and 8 assists, followed by teammate Kendra Pritzl with 17. Izzy Przybylski and Lauren Sales each had 2.

Caitlyn Bebeau scored 6, but she really stood out for her defense, Scherwinski said.

“She is really starting to play with more confidence and more physical,” he said. “Ivy Popowski, Izzy Przybylski, and Lizzie Pritzl also continue to bring some physical good guard defense.”

The Drummond scorers included Kyla Hanson who led a balanced Lumberjill attack with 17 points. Teammate Ella Wald scored 16, Nora Skoraczeski had 15, and Kaydence Roberts had 4.

Butternut falls to 12-5 and remains in third place in the conference and are 16-6 overall. Drummond improves to 14-2 in conference and 16-5 overall.

Butternut will host Prentice in a non-conference match on Tuesday before a rematch at Drummond on Feb. 15, which is the final game of the regular season for Butternut.
