    Prentice girls upset Butternut

The Prentice High School varsity girls basketball team won a shocker on the road with a 57-43 non-conference win at Butternut on Feb. 13. The Buccaneers win came on Senior Night for the Butternut students.

The Midgets came out flat against the Buccaneers, which may have a little to do with trying to bounce back from an emotionally draining loss to second place Drummond on Feb. 9, said Butternut Coach Troy Scherwinski.

“Prentice was the wrong team to face in that case as the Lady Bucs were fundamentally sound and knocked down their shots enroute to a 57-43 win,” he said. “We kept cutting into their lead, but never really got our game going. Prentice played a good game and took it to us. We have to pick ourselves back up, there are no easy match ups the rest of the way through.”

The Butternut scorers were led by Jersey Polencheck with 20 and 7 assists, followed by Kendra Pritzl who added 15, Caitlynn Bebeau with 6, and Kaycie Scherwinski with 2.

The Prentice scorers were led by Kali Heikkinen with 15, followed by Lydia Harding with 14, Leah Nehls, 9, Luca Blomberg, 8, Abby Schuetz, 3, and Kylie Orysen, Kylee Suess, Ashlyn Englund and Lauren Geiger each with 2.

Butternut falls to 16-7 overall and will travel to Drummond on Thursday for a conference rematch to close out the regular season. They host Mercer in the first round of Regionals on Tuesday at 7:00.

The game was a good tune up for both teams as they prepare to start the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association 2024 Girls Basketball Tournament Series where both Butternut and Prentice play in the Division 5 bracket, Scherwinski said.

Butternut is seeded at No. 4 and will host rival No. 13 Mercer in round 1 at 7 p.m. Feb. 20. Prentice is seeded at No. 7 and will host No. 10 Washburn in round 1 at the same day and time.
