    Phillips girls beat C-W, host Cameron for regional final on Saturday

    PHILLIPS — The postseason varsity girls basketball excitement grows as Phillips moves on to the Division 4 Regional final of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association 2024 Girls Basketball Tournament Series. The No. 2 seed Loggers defeated No. 7 seed Chetek-Weyerhaeuser 82-43 in Phillipson Feb. 23, and will now host No. 3 Cameron at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24.

    “We got out and ran like we do; We like to run fast,” said Phillips Coach Mike Eggebrecht. “It was a good game for us.”

    The Logger scorers were led by junior guard Mataya Eckert with 25 points, followed by senior guard Kacy Eggebrecht with 15, junior shooting guard Kacie Quinnell, 15, junior point guard Sarah Knaack, 12, senior shooting guard Alie Williams, 8, senior forward Halle Lehman, 6, junior guard Lilly Miller, 4, junior guard Mataya Eckert and sophomore shooting guard Leah Harper, each with 3, and junior forward Kendra Timmers, junior shooting guard Kacie Quinnell and sophomore point guard Anna Belan, each with 2.

    Eckert also reached the high school varsity basketball milestone of scoring her 1,000th point during the first half. There were celebrations all around after the game for her accomplishment and for the team’s regional semifinal victory.

    The Chetek-Weyerhaeuser scorers were led by senior guard Hannah Solie with 18 points, followed by junior guard Taya Whittenberger with 11, junior forward Ali Jenson with 5, senior guard Zoe Nelson with 4, senior forward Madelyn Martin and sophomore guard Calli Johnson, each with 2, and freshman point guard Victoria Keller with 1.

    Phillips had a bye in the first round and Chetek-Weyerhaeuser defeated No. 10 seed Spencer 49-44 on Thursday to face Phillips on Friday. Cameron also had a first round bye and defeated No. 6 Cadott 59-44 on Friday, after Cadott defeated No. 11 seed Chequamegon 65-16 on Thursday.

    “We will watch some film, we’ll get some rest tonight, and do a little shoot-around tomorrow and be ready to go,” Coach Eggebrecht said.
