The Flambeau River YMCA recently announced the hiring of Scott Schultz as the executive director.

Schultz was selected for his prior experience working with YMCA programming elsewhere and for his strong local community ties, according to the YMCA of the Northwoods press release. Schultz was most recently the city of Park Falls Parks and Recreation director and will actually be working in the same building as the city donated the city hall space for the YMCA facility.

“I’ve been among the many people cheering on the development of the Flambeau River YMCA in my hometown,” Schultz said. “To have the opportunity to serve as its first executive director is a true honor. Thank you to the YMCA and all those involved for wanting to invest here and being willing to work in partnership with the city.”

The city of Park Falls was instrumental in ensuring a state grant by making the space available for the facility. The goal of creating the park and recreation position was to establish community involvement and recreational activities in the area, said Park Falls Mayor Tara Tervort.

“The new opportunity of partnering with the YMCA fills this void and opens new programs the city wouldn’t have the means to produce,” Tervort said. “The fact that his role will remain the same in our community but even better, makes this transition the best to fill those needs of our city.”

Prior to his return to the Northwoods in 2019, Schultz spent nearly seven years in a variety of operational and leadership roles for the YMCA of Greater Waukesha County and the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee. A military veteran, Schultz achieved the rank of Corporal in the United States Marine Corps.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Scott make this transition to diligently serve our region,” said YMCA of the Northwoods CEO Linda May. “Scott’s deep local connections, combined with his ongoing community service and leadership, makes him a perfect fit to guide the brand-new Flambeau River YMCA.”

The Flambeau River YMCA will include a childcare center, 24/7 fitness center, multi-generational room, group exercise area and community room. Construction is slated to start in summer 2024 with the facility opening in summer 2025. The YMCA of the Northwoods currently provides free afterschool and school-aged summer day camp as part of the 21st Century Grant with the Chequamegon School District.

As to the other areas the park and recreation department oversee, the city committee is actively pursuing solutions with historical preservation, the future development of trail systems, event organization, and future development of the train depot.

Schultz lives in Park Falls with his wife Jessica and their three children, Colton, Adriana, and Annabelle. His duties with the Flambeau River YMCA begin this month.
