    Loggers, Eagles compete well at Rhinelander

    Phillips and Chequamegon high schools each celebrated track and field accomplishments at the Rhinelander Invitational on May 9. Chequamegon senior Autumn Michalski was a triple winner of the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 run events, and Phillips senior Hayden Sokolowski won the 110 and 300 meter hurdles to highlight just two star athletes on the day.

    Phillips placed third overall in the boys events and fourth in the girls. Chequamegon was fourth overall in the boys events and sixth in the girls. Other teams competing included Tomahawk (first place-girls), Northland Pines (first place-boys), Rhinelander (A, B and C teams), Antigo, Merrill, Crandon, Mercer, Lakeland Union, and Three Lakes.

    “We had a total of 19 personal records on the night, so the teams are definitely improving and we are very proud of that,” said Chequamegon head coach Mary Patterson. “The teams have come a long way from meet one, with everyone contributing in different ways.”

    BOYS

    Highlights for the boys events include Sokolowski winning the boys 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.96, and Chequamegon senior Robert Schienebeck placing second at 17.19. Sokolowski placed first in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41.83, and Schienebeck repeated a second place showing at 44.81.

    Phillips sophomore Ben Virnig placed first in the pole vault with a jump of 12-0. Chequamegon junior Winter Edberg was fourth at 10-0, and junior teammate Frank Kief was eighth with 9-6.

    The Phillips boys won the 4x400 meter relay event with a time of 3:41.17. The two Chequamegon teams finished sixth and eighth.

    Phillips sophomore Gavin Esterholm placed second in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 9:49.86, just behind first place Taylor Karcz of Crandon at 9:48.27. Phillips teammates James Vollendorf, Logan Sokolowski, Evan Johnson finished fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Jayden Oscar and Zac Roberts placed 10th and 12th for Chequamegon.

    Chequamegon Jarrett Heckendorf placed third in the boys 400 meter dash with a time of 54.04. Eli Kerner and Zach Ritter of Northland Pines placed first and second.

    Phillips senior Julian Ellingen placed fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:14.16. Senior teammate Maverick Hoogland placed fifth at 2:17.05. Taylor Karcz of Crandon was first, followed by Zach Ritter of Northland Pines and Shawn Denis of Rhinelander.

    Phillips freshman Jonathan Parker placed fifth in the triple jump. Tyler Janikowski of Three Lakes, Myles Eagleson of Rhinelander, Kyan Lins of Northland Pines and Maccoy Holmquist of Lakeland Union placed first-to-fourth.

    Chequamegon senior AJ Morgan placed fourth in the discus throw, and junior teammate Greg Morgan placed seventh. Reid Schultz, Samuel Balge and Logan Schwinger, all of Rhinelander, placed first-to-third.

    GIRLS

    Michalski placed first in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:03.96. Tomahawk junior Alli Palmer was second at 5:40.74, and Phillips junior Meredith Merlak was third with 5:49.94.

    Phillips teammates Endora Udovich, Sailor Madsen and Aubrey Sidenbender were seventh, ninth and 13th, respectively.

    Michalski won the 1,600 meter run with a time of 11:09.50. Merlak placed second at 12:43.64. Chequamegon senior Abigail Humphrey was sixth, and Phillips freshman Sailor Madsen was seventh.

    Michalski placed first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:14.77. Phillips sophomore Leah Harper was second at 2:27.01, and freshman teammate Ruby McCormick was fifth at 2:39.29.

    “It was a very solid night with Autumn putting down a season best 800,” Patterson said. “She ran the races she needed to and is definitely ready to start the tournament.”

    Phillips junior Sarah Knaack placed first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.96. Junior teammate Jessica Morrone was sixth, along with teammate Katelyn Kurth and Journee Wood in 11th and 14th.

    Phillips freshman Addie Gabay was sixth in the 400 meter dash. Junior teammate was 10th.

    Phillips junior Jaycee Pomeroy placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles. She placed sixth in the 100 meter hurdles.

    Phillips placed second behind Tomahawk in the 4x400 meter relay. Chequamegon placed sixth.

    Phillips freshman Addie Gabay placed ninth in the triple jump, while freshman teammate Sailor Madsen was 17th. Chequamegon junior Ella Weinberger was 13th, and sophomore teammate Mallory Smith was 15th.

    Phillips freshman Layla Staroba placed 10th in the discus throw. Chequamegon freshman Kalaniva Salvador was 14th.
