The Chequamegon High School Cross Country team placed second and the boys placed ninth among 22 teams at the Solon Springs Invitational meet at Hidden Greens North Golf Course on Oct. 7.

"It was a great preview of what’s to come for sectionals in a few weeks to get on that course," said Chequamegon Coach Mary Patterson. "Our teams continue to battle thru a lot and fight hard. The girls coming away with second, only 13 points out of first was really good. They all continue to have their roles and do their jobs."

Cameron place first at the event for the girls, while Northerwestern was third and Bruce was fourth. There were 74 runners for the varsity girls with Inez Schmidt, of Cameron as the top runner of the day with a time of 19:46.5, followed by Sophie Navarro, of Northwestern, with 20:28.5, and Zoey Kemmitz, of Bruce with 20:30.5.

The top Chequamegon runner was Hailey Bodoh in ninth with a time of 21:40.3. The other Screaming Eagles runners include Madyson Ernst in 13th; Adison Bablick, 15th; Clare Yunk, 19th; Mallory Smith, 26th; and Vanessa Schmidt, 27th.

Solon Springs/Northwood placed first in the varsity boys team event. Unity was second, and Northwestern was third. There were 117 runners for the boys varsity with Gavin Stewart, of Ladysmith in first with a time of 16:02.2, followed by Isaac Dickenson, of Solon Springs/Northwood, with 16:34.9, and Morgan Martens, of Northwestern, with 16:53.1.

The top Chequamegon runner was Cooper Michalski, who placed 32nd with a time of 18:51.0. The other Screaming Eagles runners were Jayden Oscar, 38; Austin Hoffman, 48th; Matthew Hirtreiter, 51st; Lucas Walker, 71st; Bently Jorgensen, 95th; Winter Edberg, 96th; Frank Kief, 97th; and Ethan Humphrey, 108th.

The Chequamegon Cross Country team will compete in the Marawood Conference Meet next Thursday, Oct 17, at Timms Hill County Park in Ogema. The meet is hosted by Rib Lake/Prentice. The same Solon Springs course will be used for the upcoming sectional meet.
