New market opens in Prichard to combat food desert, lack of healthy options

PRICHARD, Ala. (WKRG) — M&K’s Fresh Produce Market opens Monday morning in Prichard. Much of the city is in what’s known as a “food desert” where affordable, healthy food options are hard to get.

A news release from the City of Prichard says:

As a community labeled as a food desert, this new M & K’s Fresh Produce represents a significant step forward in providing our citizens with better access to fresh, daily produce. The M & K’s Fresh Produce aims to enhance the quality of life for all residents by offering a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious foods that are essential for a healthy lifestyle.

Mayor Jimmie Gardner expressed enthusiasm for the new M & K’s Fresh Produce stating, “This is a pivotal moment for Prichard. The opening of the M & K’s Fresh Produce not only addresses a critical need in our community but also symbolizes our commitment to ensuring that every resident has access to fresh and healthy food options. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on our city’s health and well-being.”

Prichard has one supermarket on the east side of the city. This produce market is on the city’s west side.
