GACO joins list of closures
Following multiple meetings offsite, the Grand Avenue Community Outreach Board of Directors announced Thursday morning on Facebook its intentions to leave the doors on the severely flood damaged building closed permanently. The outreach which housed a free food and clothing outreach, along with a community kitchen, prom dress offering and multiple service providers, issued a statement online. “It is with grieving hearts that we announce the permanent closure of Grand Avenue Community Outreach at 605 Grand Ave in Spencer, Iowa. The losses we incurred in this 100-year-old building have been tremendous. The repairs and ongoing maintenance required for such an old structure are more than what we as an organization can bear. For the health and safety of our tenants and guests, the building is now inaccessible. … We are working hard to formulate a location and plan to continue serving meals with our volunteer team from the kitchen. Additionally, we are actively seeking spaces to continue the most needed ministries in post-flood Spencer.” The announcement included appreciation to all of the countless volunteers, donors and dedicated leaders who gave time and resources into this ministry.
