Seven additional counties approved for FEMA Public Assistance under the April Presidential Major Disaster Declaration
(Des Moines) Governor Kim Reynolds today announced the approval of Clarke, Crawford, Harrison, Pottawattamie, Ringgold, Shelby, and Union Counties for FEMA Public Assistance under the previously approved Major Disaster Declaration for Iowa counties where significant damage was sustained from severe storms and tornadoes that occurred April 26-27, 2024, and continuing.

This weekend Iowans and other moon gazers will get to witness a 'Buck Moon.'. The moon will appear full for the next 3 days, from tonight (July 19) through Monday (July 22) morning. Normally full moons occur every 30-ish days as the moon moves across the side of the earth.

Friday, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office conducted a targeted traffic enforcement project from 8 AM to noon. Four additional deputies were out along Iowa 60 and U.S. 75, focusing on speeding, seatbelt use, and distracted driving. This resulted in 11 citations, including two for speeding, and two for seatbelt use – and 40 warnings, including ten for speeding and three for seatbelt use. This project is funded in part by a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. Iowa has had 154 fatality crashes this year. In 43% of those crashes, a seatbelt was not used.
Rock Valley schools set plan for new school year
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa (Sioux County Radio) - The school year will begin a couple of weeks late in Rock Valley this fall as the community recovers from flooding. According to Sioux County Radio, classrooms aren’t expected to be ready on time. Students in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade will start classes at Trinity Christian Reformed Church. Third, fourth, and fifth graders will start in cleaned and sanitized, but unfinished, classrooms.

Owner says Southpark Mall in Spencer will reopen after flooding
Southpark Mall, a retail hub in Spencer that was hit by flash flooding a month ago, will reopen according to an executive with the company that owns the property. “We’re looking for all of our tenants to come back,” Steven Williams, a senior vice president for Security National Properties, said. “We have commitment from all of our nationals and anchors. They are heavily involved in construction and coordinating with us right now to get these stores open as soon as possible for the local residents. We know they need places to shop and we are pushing to get this mall back open so we can serve the local community.”
