The rescue of more than 70 dogs from a Calvert residence on May 8 prompted the five-day closure to the public of the Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter, county government officials reported.

The rescue operation is the result of an ongoing investigation by the county’s animal control division. The location of the house has not been revealed and according to authorities no charges have been filed at this time.

The county’s animal shelter “remains committed to finding loving forever homes for all animals in our care,” Dave McDowell, the county’s public safety director said in a press release. “An investigation like this involves a great deal of time, attention and workload. This is a collaborative effort and we will rely heavily on our community during this time. The shelter and staff are appreciative of the ongoing support as we work for a positive outcome for these animals.”

During the five days the shelter was closed to the public veterinarian care and health assessments were provided to the rescued dogs.

The shelter is located at 5055 Hallowing Point Road in Prince Frederick. Contact 410-535-7387 for inquires or to schedule an appointment.
