Man wins $50,000 in second lottery victory after using the same strategy for years

A Maryland man has won the lottery for a second time after using the same strategy for years.

The man, identified only as "Mr D," claimed a $50,000 prize in the Pick 5 game after playing the lottery for five decades. He had previously enjoyed playing scratch-offs and Mega Millions but began playing the Pick 5 and Pick 4 games in 2022.

The Prince George’s County resident said he first started playing with random numbers, but soon adopted his own strategy for the games, using the same set of numbers every time. And his strategy paid off - twice.

The man previously won $20,000 on Pick 4 using his personal set of numbers. But he never imagined he would win more than double that a second time.

Mr D said his latest winning moment occurred after he bought a $2 ticket at Capital Liquors in Capitol Heights. The loyal player placed a $1 straight bet on the number 41083 for the June 20 evening and June 21 midday drawings. Later, at another venue, Mr D was waiting in line at a snack shack when he checked his Pick 5 numbers for a win using the My Lottery app on his phone.

Overwhelmed with disbelief, he hurried to his car to verify the numbers away from the crowd. There, he confirmed his $50,000 win.

“I finally got it! I’ve been playing the same numbers for years!” Mr D said after claiming his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “I finally won!”

Mr D revealed he intends to use his winnings to pay bills, save for the future and treat himself to a well-deserved vacation. Reflecting on his win and the odds of playing Pick 5 again, Mr D shared, “You better believe it, there’s more money out there to be won and I hope to win it.”

Mr D is not the only person who got lucky this week. Earlier this week, 32-year-old Wayne County man snagged a $6 million cash prize from the second lottery ticket he bought this year. The Michigan man told lottery officials he hardly buys lottery tickets, but decided randomly to buy a 500X Money Maker ticket from a local 7-Eleven store on South Groesbeck Highway in Clinton Township.

"I play lottery games every once in a while, and this 500X Money Maker ticket was only the second ticket I have purchased so far this year," the player said. "I went into the store to purchase a few things and saw the 500X Money Maker game, so I asked the clerk what the ticket number was on the next ticket. When she said 14, I told her I'd take it because 14 is my wife and I's lucky number."

The player said he was shocked when he realized the ticket was a winner. "I scratched the ticket off and, when I saw I won $6 million, I started hyperventilating! I had to take the day off work because I was in a state of shock. I texted my wife and said: 'Lucky number 14.' She jokingly replied: 'What do you mean? Are we millionaires?' As soon as I got home, I told her the big news," he said.
