Culver’s moo-ving its way to Princeton

Concrete mixers, ButterBurgers, and a little Wisconsin flair could be moving its way into Princeton in the near future.

Plans for the construction of a Culver’s fast food restaurant are taking place behind the scenes with Princeton city staff and the Princeton Planning Commission.

During the Princeton City Council meeting on Thursday, June 13, the council approved a conditional use permit submitted by Jim LaValle to allow for drive-thru hours at the Culver’s to be from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Prior to being brought to the council, the Princeton Planning Commission reviewed and approved the conditional use permit as well as a site plan application for the construction of the Culver’s during its meeting on May 20.

The location of the restaurant, should it be constructed, would be at 200 19th Ave. N. next door to the Princeton Walmart.

The site of the property is zoned as a B-3 General Commercial District within the city, which means there are specific requirements the restaurant must meet in order to be approved for the drive-thru hours, all of which the location and the site plan have met.

Some of the requirements include: nearby residential properties must be screened from vehicle lights, adequate stacking is provided at the menu board and pick-up window, and the drive-thru hours are limited to 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. unless otherwise extended by the council as part of a conditional use permit.

According to the City Council’s agenda packet and the memo related to the conditional use permit, extending the drive-thru hours of the Culver’s would not be an issue, as it meets the requirements, and the nearby Walmart also closes at 11 p.m.

Typically, the Princeton Planning Commission acts as the final decision for similar items. However, city ordinances specifically state conditional use permits related to businesses in B-3 General Commercial District are to be presented to the council.

The planning commission also approved the site plan for the Culver’s should the project continue to move forward.

In the site plan it states that the Culver’s would seat 81 customers and have a total of 36 parking spaces, 10 of which are designated for staff, two for handicap parking, and additional order waiting spaces after ordering in the drive-thru.

The drive-thru is planned for the east side of the building, where it will split into two 10-foot lanes with one kiosk and menu board each, and a pick-up window on the north side of the building.

The planning commission approved the plan with a few conditions, including the addition of a Knox Box in coordination with the Princeton fire chief, work shall be carried out with minimum interference of traffic, the applicant will contact Princeton Public Works and Public Utilities for the connections of utilities, and the contractor will obtain written permission from adjacent property owners prior to any work, to name a few.

The planning commission’s approval of the site plan acts as the final decision-making authority for the item, and it was not required to be approved by the council.

No other information — such as a start date for the construction of the Culver’s, when the restaurant may open, or other similar information — was provided.

Additional information will be in the Union-Times as it becomes available.
