These will be the busiest 4th of July travel days in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Independence Day travel forecast for West Virginia has been released. If you want to avoid traffic, here are the days you should stay at home, according to the West Virginia Parkways Authority.

An estimated 1.385 million people are expected to drive just on the West Virginia Turnpike, which goes from Charleston down to the Virginia border near Princeton, which is even more than last year. According to a release from the West Virginia Division of Highways (DOH), the busiest days will be Friday, June 28, Saturday, June 29, and Sunday, July 7—with more than 150,000 travelers expected on the just on the West Virginia Turnpike each of those days.

“We fully expect that both weekends will be extremely busy, and with many out-of-state travelers passing through our area. We encourage everyone to plan their travel accordingly and remember that peak travel times every day will be between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.,” Executive Director of the West Virginia Parkways Authority Jeff Miller said in the release.

These predictions match national flight predictions , with the Friday before and Sunday after expected to be the busiest travel days.

The Transportation Security Administration has already set several travel records in 2024, including on Sunday when nearly 3 million flyers went through TSA —the most ever screened at airports in a single day. That record is expected to fall on Friday, June 28.
